Viyano ‒ A Passion for Kurds and Mountain Life
The Werner Finke Collection. With the assistance from Eszter Ágota Hárs and Marina Stoilova
1. Auflage, 2025
Werner Finke spent over 30 years ethnographically documenting the everyday culture of the Kurds in Turkey. He traveled to the Kurdish regions almost every year and created a comprehensive multimedia documentation and an ethnographic collection for the Weltmuseum Wien. Apart from a few smaller presentations and a larger exhibition, his multimedia material has remained unseen to date. This publication accompanies the digital release of large parts of the collection. The anthology is the outcome of the FWF project ZOZAN and is organized in three large thematic sections: In the first section, an extensive biographical outline of Werner Finke’s life with a clear focus on his socialization within the scientific framework of ethnology in Vienna provides some initial background information. The second section of the volume refers in detail to Werner Finke’s considerable collecting activities. Several chapters deal with the extensive visual documentation material and the methodological and technical perspectives of the photographic collection, while further articles analyze the audio recordings realized between 1974 and 1975 and the collection of ethnographica that Werner Finke brought to the Weltmuseum Wien (Museum of Ethnology). The editors followed an innovative participatory approach to elaborate forms of representation in the course of the ZOZAN project, with the team contacting the people Werner Finke accompanied over the years, whose lives he documented, photographed and recorded. The initial results of these contacts led to a further article. The third section is presented under the title “Transformations”, referring to the period of developments in transhumance and the transformation of traditional economic forms in the last two decades—i.e., the time after the collection comes to an end.
