Die Arbeit behandelt den Zusammenhang von Identität und materieller Kultur, der grundlegender Gegenstand der archäologischen Forschung ist. Eine direkte Beziehung zwischen den Dingen des täglichen Lebens und den Identitätsaspekten der Menschen (Geschlecht, Alter, Ethnie, u.a.) wird im Einklang mit post-kolonialen Theorien kritisch hinterfragt und anhand einer Fallstudie aus dem alten Ägypten (Tell el-Dab‘a) thematisiert, die ausschließlich materielle Kultur zur Interpretation bietet. Neben einer ausführlichen Einleitung zur Formation von Identitätsaspekten und Kulturkonzepten im Hinblick auf die Archäologie, werden Definitionen ('Verflechtung' und 'Aneignung') und eine Platzierung von Fusionen von materieller Kultur unterschiedlicher Bereiche im theoretischen Gerüst vorgeschlagen. The book examines the connection between identity and material culture, which forms the backbone of archaeology. The assumed direct relationship between the things of daily life and the aspects of identity such as gender, age or ethnicity to name but a few is challenged under consideration of post-colonial theories and critically applied to a case study in ancient Egypt (Tell el-Dab'a), which provides exclusively material culture for interpretation. Besides a detailed introduction to the formation and current use of aspects of identity and culture concepts with special regard to archaeology, definitions (such as 'entanglement' and 'appropriation') and a placement of fusions of material culture from various areas in the theoretical framework are proposed.

Die vorliegende Arbeit enthält den abschließenden Ausgrabungsbericht von drei Siedlungsphasen in Tell el-Dabʿa, das im ägyptischen Nildelta liegt. 

Diese Siedlungen wurden vermutlich von Menschen aus den unteren Schichten bewohnt. Dies kann aus der Größe der Häuser und dem erhalten gebliebenen Hausrat geschlossen werden. Der Bericht rekonstruiert die Lebensumstände der Menschen im marschähnlichen Nildelta im späten Mittleren Reich (ca. 1830–1700 v. Chr.). Neben der Schlammziegelarchitektur, die typisch für altägyptische Wohnbauten ist, wurden Rundsilos zur Speicherung von Getreide, Feuerstellen, industrielle Öfen und unregelmäßige Verbindungswege ans Licht gebracht.

Die Wohnhäuser werden systematisch beschrieben und gemeinsam mit den Funden vorgestellt und analysiert. Keramik- und Steingefäße, Steingeräte und Figurinen aus Fayence sowie Objekte aus Hartgestein bilden die häufigsten Fundkategorien. Die Tierknochenanalysen wurden ebenfalls miteinbezogen, sodass über die Ernährung der Bewohner Aufschluss gegeben werden kann. Importierte Keramikgefäße aus der Levante und Oberägypten geben Einblicke in das Warenaustauschnetzwerk mit diesen Gebieten. Dieses Buch bildet eine reiche Primärquelle zur Siedlungsarchäologie in Ägypten.

Der vorgestellte Siedlungstyp ist durch die bekannten Siedlungen bisher nicht abgedeckt. Die Anordnung erfolgte unregelmäßig mit individuellen Häusern, die weder in der Größe noch im Grundriss einheitlich sind. Eine solche Anlage, die man als organisch gewachsen bezeichnen könnte, steht im Gegensatz zu den geplanten orthogonalen Siedlungen, die als typisch für Ägypten gelten und die aus Lahun oder den nubischen Forts bekannt sind. Darüber hinaus kann durch die Vorlage von drei aufeinanderfolgenden Siedlungsschichten die Entwicklung dieser Siedlung über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 100 Jahren nachgezeichnet werden. So trägt dieser Band Neues zum bisherigen Corpus von Siedlungstypen bei.

 The current volume presents the final excavation report of three late Middle Kingdom settlement layers at the site of Tell el-Dab‘a in the Egyptian Nile delta.

These settlement layers comprise a number of dwellings, which belonged to non-elite people judging by their size and remaining inventories, who lived in the marsh-like environment in the north of Egypt in the late Middle Kingdom (ca 1830–1700 BC). Beside the mud brick architecture typical for ancient Egyptian housing, storage facilities such as rounded silos, open air hearths, industrial ovens, and irregular alleyways were unearthed.

The houses are systematically described and analysed in combination with the associated finds. These finds include pottery and stone vessels, stone tools such as querns and grinders, chipped stone tools and a few other items made of faience. A small number of objects made of hard rock imply that they must have been imported because such stones do not exist in the delta. Importantly animal bones inform us about the diet of the people living there, whilst imported pottery vessels from the Levant and Upper Egypt show these exchange networks. This book provides a much-needed primary source for late Middle Kingdom settlement archaeology, a topic generally neglected in the literature. 

In addition, the book describes a settlement type so far not represented in the known repertoire, namely a self-organised settlement with individual dwellings not uniform in size or lay-out. Such lay-outs stand in contrast to intentionally founded settlements following a rigid plan in rows with orthogonal streets and regular blocks of houses as known from Lahun in Northern Upper Egypt or from the forts in Nubia. Moreover, due to the fact that three successive settlement layers are presented, it is possible to follow the development of the settlement over a period of more than 100 years. In this way the book adds information to the current corpus of settlement types.

Diese Arbeit legt die Anhaltspunkte für die Synchronisierung der Schichten zweier Siedlungsplätze des späten Mittleren Reichs und der Zweiten Zwischenzeit (ca. 1770–1550/40 v. Chr.) in Ägypten vor. Die Grundlage dafür bildet das keramische Fundmaterial aus reinen Siedlungsschichten der beiden antiken Hauptstädte in Tell el-Dab'a (Auaris) im östlichen Nildelta und Kom Rabica (Memphis) südlich von Kairo. Neben der Gleichsetzung der archäologischen Schichten und damit der relativen Chronologien, sollte auch festgestellt werden, ob die Hyksos, die nach den teilweise verderbten Schriftquellen in Ägypten eingefallen sein und ganz Ägypten beherrscht haben sollen, tatsächlich physisch in Memphis als Siedler (oder Besatzer) anwesend waren. Die angewandten Methoden umfassen Zufallsstichprobenziehung, presence/absence-Analyse und quantitative Analysen. Die betreffenden archäologischen Schichten umfassen Phase G/4 bis D/2 in Tell el-Dabʿa und Level VIII bis V in Kom Rabica. Während sich der Beginn der beiden Sequenzen gut vergleichen ließ, stellte sich im Laufe der Analysen heraus, dass sich die materielle Kultur in Level VId bzw. E/1 verschieden weiterentwickelte. Im Delta hatte sich unter der Hyksosherrschaft eine eigene materielle Kultur entwickelt, die sowohl Züge der levantinischen Mittleren Bronzezeitkultur als auch der ägyptischen Kultur beinhaltet. Diese Kultur findet seinen wesentlichsten Ausdruck in der Keramik. Im Gegensatz dazu entwickelte sich die Keramik in Kom Rabica aus dem älteren Korpus des Mittleren Reiches. Die Analyse der Befunde legt nahe, dass die Hyksos Memphis aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach nicht im herkömmlichen Sinn kolonisierten. This volume presents the data used for the synchronisation of the stratigraphic levels of two Egyptian settlement sites, one of the late Middle Kingdom and the other, the Second Intermediate Period (ca. 1770 – 1550/40 BC). The analysis is based on the ceramic finds from the settlement layers of the ancient capitals of Tell el-Dab´a (Avaris) in the eastern Delta and of Kom Rabica (Memphis) just south of modern Cairo. Whilst the main focus of the research project was synchronising the relative chronologies of these two sites, another activity was an investigation of the possibility of archaeologically tracing the physical presence of the Hyksos, who allegedly conquered and ruled all of Egypt, in Memphis. The methods applied include random sampling, presence/absence analysis and quantitative analysis, the levels in question being phases G/4 to D/2 at Tell el-Dab´a and levels VIII to V at Kom Rabica. Whereas the material from the beginning of these sequences is quite comparable, in the course of analysis it emerged that the development of the material cultures of these two sites took different routes, particularly from level VId and phase E/1 onwards. Under the rule of the Hyksos, in the delta area a hybrid material culture developed that contained traits of Levantine Middle Bronze Age culture as well as the native Egyptian culture, as is most clearly expressed in the ceramic corpus. In contrast, the ceramic corpus at Kom Rabica developed out of the later Middle Kingdom corpus. This suggests that Memphis was not subjected to colonisation by the Hyksos.

Mergel C-Tonkeramik ist ein Material, das im Mittleren Reich und in der Zweiten Zwischenzeit an vielen Orten Ägyptens vorkommt, besonders häufig jedoch in der Memphis-Fayum Region, wo auch der Ursprung des Tones vermutet wird. Somit kann diese Objektgruppe als Indikator für diese Zeit betrachtet werden. Die Analyse des Formenrepertoires und der zeitlichen Verteilung an einigen Fundplätzen zeigte jedoch, daß diese Keramikart durchaus sowohl früher als auch später verwendet wurde, wenn auch in weit geringerem Ausmaß und für unterschiedliche Gefäßtypen. Neben der Beschreibung des Tones und der Betrachtung der Herkunftsfrage des Rohmaterials, wurden erstmals alle bisher bekannten Gefäßformen in einer Typologie vorgestellt. Der Großteil der Objekte stammt aus Tell el-Dabʿa und zwar sowohl aus Gräbern, Tempel- und Siedlungsbereichen. Weitere Belege wurden in den Ausgrabungen von Memphis/Kom Rabi’a, Lischt und Dahschur gesammelt, wo diese Keramik den Hauptbestandteil des Mergeltonkeramikrepertoires bildet. Da diese Keramik auch im Sinaigebiet, in weiten Teilen Ã„gyptens und so weit südlich wie in Nubien auftritt, konnte mit der Skizzierung der Warenverteilung innerhalb Ãgyptens begonnen werden. Marl C pottery is found at a large number of sites in Egypt, particularly in the Memphis-Fayoum region from which such pottery is presumed to originate. It is as is well-known, a good indicator of the Middle Kingdom and Second Intermediate Period, but in this analysis of shapes, find places and chronological discussion it becomes obvious that Marl C was also utilised both in earlier and later periods, and for a wider variety of vessel types than previously realised. Beginning with the description of Marl C clays and a discussion of their geographical origins, this monograph continues with a catalogue of all known Marl C pottery types.



The majority of the vessels illustrated derive from graves, temple precincts and settlements areas at Tell el-Dabʿs, with further examples drawn from Memphis/Kom Rabi’a, Lisht and Dahschur. That such pottery is also found in Sinai, other parts of Egypt and Nubia points to a complex system of internal trade which is also touched upon in this study.
