The series Wiener Byzantinistische Studien was founded in 1964 when the Byzantine Studies was established as a subject at the University of Vienna. The aim of the series is the publication of works from the entire field of Byzantine studies; this includes monographs and specialized studies as well as critical text editions (with translations).
The series includes, among others, the critical edition of the dialogues with a Persian by Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos and the basic work on Byzantine prose rhythm. It promoted studies on the Byzantine metaphrasis with the anonymous metaphrasis of Anna Komnene's Alexias. Literary genres such as preambles of documents, funerary orations and autobiography are presented in monographs as well as the forms of address in letters from the early and middle Byzantine period, and the metric inscriptions on Byzantine seals and Byzantine poetry from 600 to 1000.
