Der vorliegende Band enthält 40 Studien über das römische Kaiserreich, die zwischen 2004 und 2020 publiziert wurden. Viele dieser Studien haben als Thema oder als Ausgangspunkt die Provinz Dakien. So werden die Eroberung Dakiens, die Entstehung, Kolonisierung, Organisierung und Urbanisierung der Provinz, ihre wirtschaftlichen und sozio-politischen Strukturen, ihre Militärgeschichte (Legionen, Auxiliartruppen, Rangordnung) und ihre Aufgaben besprochen. Prosopographische Studien behandeln Persönlichkeiten wie Q. Marcius Turbo, den Prätorianerpräfekten des Kaisers Hadrian oder Statthalter von Lusitanien und Obermoesien. Probleme der Kommandostrukturen in Ober- und Untermoesien und der Urbanisierung in Obermoesien, Oberpannonien und Hispania Tarraconensis werden ebenfalls berücksichtigt. Eine Studie wird der politischen Botschaft der Trajansfora gewidmet. Zu den Religionen des Reiches und der Mentalität des Reiches gehören Themen wie der Jupiterkult und provinzielle Kapitolien, die Göttin Hekate, Isiskulte und magische Texte. Weltgeschichtliche Vorgänge wie der Judenkrieg in Ägypten, die Reformen des Gallienus und die gotischen Einfälle laut den neuen Texten des Dexippus werden ebenfalls thematisiert.

 The present volume contains 40 papers on the Roman Empire, published between 2004 and 2020. Several papers have as their starting point the province of Dacia. They focus upon themes like the conquest of Dacia; the foundation, the colonisation, the organisation and the urbanisation of the province; its economic, social and politic structures; its military history (legions, auxiliary units, hierarchy) and, finally, the reasons for its abandonment. Prosopographical studies deal with personalities like Q. Marcius Turbo, the praetorian prefect of Hadrian, and governors of Lusitania and Upper Moesia. Aspects like command structures in Upper and Lower Moesia and aspects of urbanisation in Upper Moesia, Lower Moesia and Hispania Tarraconensis are also taken in account. One paper is dedicated to the political message of Trajan’s fora. The religious sphere and the mentality of the empire encompass themes like the cult of Jupiter and the provincial Capitolia, the goddess Hekate, the Isis cults and the magical texts. Events of global importance like the Jewish war in Egypt, the reforms of Gallienus and the Gothic attacks according to the new texts of Dexippos are other issues dealt with by the author.

Die Publikation handelt von der Bedeutung und Funktion von Inschriften in Wohnhäusern der Oberschicht von ca. 400 v. Chr. bis 600 n. Chr. Untersucht wurden Gemeinsamkeiten, Unterschiede und Entwicklungen der Verwendung von Texten im Wohnhaus. Die Inschriften befinden sich auf Architekturteilen wie Fassaden, Türrahmungen und Säulen, und kommen auch auf Mosaikböden, Wandmalereien und zusammen mit Skulpturen vor. Auf Wandmalereien finden sich neben Dipinti auch eingeritzte Graffiti, die Zeichnungen umfassen können. Die meisten Inschriften sind auf Erwachsene, vor allem Männer, zu beziehen. In einer wesentlich geringeren Anzahl lassen sich Frauen als Autorinnen fassen. In den Texten erscheinen Angehörige aller sozialen Schichten, die im Haus verkehrten – Freigelassene und Sklaven der familia ebenso wie Besucher und Gäste. Die Inschriften umfassen unter anderem Grüße und Wünsche an die Hausbewohner (vor allem auf Mosaikböden) ebenso wie apotropäische Inschriften zum Schutz des Hauses und seiner Bewohner, Weihungen (auf Altärchen und Götterstatuetten) und Ehrungen der Hausherren (auf Skulpturen mit deren Porträts). In den Graffiti wurde oft Gefühlen Ausdruck verliehen. Figürliche Darstellungen auf Mosaikböden und Wandmalereien waren vielfach mit erklärenden Beischriften versehen; manchmal finden sich dort auch Signaturen von Bildhauern und Mosaizisten. Die Anbringungsorte der Inschriften verteilen sich auf die Fassaden der Häuser und die gut ausgestatteten Wohnräume, einige befinden sich auch in Latrinen. Die Anbringungshöhe und die Größe der Inschriften waren meist so gewählt, dass sie eine gute Sicht- und Lesbarkeit gewährleisteten. The publication deals with the importance and function of inscriptions in residential homes in the upper layer from around 400 BC to AD 600. It investigates commonalities, differences and the development of the use of text in residential homes. The inscriptions are found on architectural components such as façades, door frames and pillars, as well as featuring in mosaics and wall paintings and on sculptures. In wall paintings we find both dipinti and spontaneous graffiti, including drawings. Most of the inscriptions can be assigned to adults, especially men. Female authors are present, but to a much smaller extent. The texts mention members of the household from all levels, referencing freedmen and slaves as well as visitors and guests. The inscriptions include, among other things, greetings and wishes on the part of those living in the house (especially those in mosaics) as well as apotropaic inscriptions to protect the house and its inhabitants, dedications (on altars and statues of deities) and praise of the head of the household (on sculptures portraying them). In many cases the graffiti were expressions of emotions. Explanatory texts were often added to figurative depictions on mosaic floors and frescoes; sometimes the sculptors or mosaicists have added their signatures. The inscriptions are located on the façades of houses and in the well-furnished and decorated living rooms, but some are also found in the latrines. The height at which they were located and the size of the inscription were generally chosen such that they could be easily seen and read.
