The CD focuses on a repertoire of Viennese song composition spanning four decades, which is rarely found in the programs of song recitals or recordings. Most of the pieces assembled here (except the songs of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert) are hardly known today. All of the music on this CD comes from fragments in Munich and Vienna newly reunited in the facsimile edition “A Veneto Liber cantus (c. 1440)” (Wiesbaden, 2012), edited by Margaret Bent and Robert Klugseder, which results from Klugseder’s discovery of four new leaves in the Austrian National Library, Vienna (Fragm. 661) and Bent’s recognition that they belonged to the same original manuscript as an existing set of fragments in the Bavarian State Library, Munich (Mus. ms 3224), eight leaves...

Schubert’s late compositions for piano duet were written during the years 1826 and 1828. They are mostly substantial and ambitious pieces with which Schubert aspired to become accepted as a composer also abroad. One of the most famous compositions is the Fantasia in F minor (D 940), of which an extensive draft has been preserved. This CD features the first complete recording of Franz Schubert's opera project Adrast (D. 137). Around the turn of the year 1819, Schubert composed 13 movements of a libretto by Johann Baptist Mayrhofer that was based on Herodotus' Histories.
