Schubert’s late compositions for piano duet were written during the years 1826 and 1828. They are mostly substantial and ambitious pieces with which Schubert aspired to become accepted as a composer also abroad. One of the most famous compositions is the Fantasia in F minor (D 940), of which an extensive draft has been preserved. It shows considerable deviations from the final version and has now been published for the first time in Compositions for Piano-Duets 3 of the New Schubert Edition. Edited by Walburga Litschauer in collaboration with Werner Aderhold, this twelfth and final volume concludes its series of piano works. The present CD comprises a lecture-recital of the internationally acclaimed piano duo Egri and Pertis together with Walburga Litschauer. It features some compositions from the last year of Schubert’s life and, for the first time, also preliminary stages reconstructed from drafts, which provide insights into the composer’s workshop. The CD series Klingende Forschung is a result of the cooperation between the Department of Musicology of the Institute of Art History and Musicology and the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
