Disziplinierung im Alltag des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit

Attempts to influence and regulate life in a policing, disciplining and didactic way are phenomena to be found in every society. This is particularly true for the Middle Ages and the early modern period. It can be proved that the mentioned attempts to influence were tried to be realised, on the one hand, by various norms, laws and regulations, on the other hand with the help of didactic-moralistic literature and of images. Moreover, the general organisation of space, town-planning, testaments, chronicles or inventaries played important roles in visualising regulating efforts. Self-discipline was a relevant virtue of medieval rulers. The Institut für Realienkunde des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit of the Austrian Academy of Sciences organised its 11th international conference in October 1996 to deal with that important field of historical research. The thirteen papers of specialists from eight countries represent the various approaches towards the topic.
