Sakralität und Mobilität im Kaukasus und Südosteuropa

Sakralität und Mobilität im Kaukasus und Südosteuropa
1. Auflage, 2017

St George in the Caucasus: politics, gender, mobility
Despite what many people believe, the land of Georgia and its people are not named after St George. Nonetheless, the warrior saint is exceptionally popular in the Caucasus, especially in those regions which are, or once were, Orthodox Christian. In this paper, I present an overview of the St George cult in the Caucasus. The principal themes will be the combinatory power of the figure of St George in both textual and visual representations (which I will term “valence”), and its appropriation in popular religious systems. Also to be discus-sed here is the pairing of localized avatars of St George with a female supernatural figure, and the role of this pairing in traditional beliefs about male mobility for the purpose of obtaining resources.

Andrei Bitov is one of the numerous 20th century Russian authors who wrote about the Caucasus. Like most of them, he references the tradition of Russian literary texts about the Caucasus, quoting classical Russian authors of the 19th and 20th centuries. This paper deals with three texts written by Bitov in different periods of his development as an author and offering different perceptions of the Caucasus. In each of the texts he sacralises the Caucasian landscape, but in each case in a different way. For instance, in 1967, the year of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution Bitov writes a book about Armenia, portraying the Soviet Republic as a land with a sacred landscape and not mentioning the Soviet Union at all. By stressing the continuity of thousands of years of Armenian history, and by depicting the landscape in biblical terms, he seems to subversively express the idea that nothing exists forever, not even Soviet power.

In this article the special meanings of the terms holy and sacred will be shown in a comparative way in reference to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. For explaining the differences I do not start with the so called empiric facts, looking at on moments which are named holy and sacred, but asking for the foundation of concepts Generally spoken, these three religions at least connected in the concept of the “one God”. In ancient Judaism sacred is bound on the revelation of God to his appearance, words and the temple. Later this concept becomes “empty”, because of the destruction of the temple, and the end of the time of the prophets. Holy becomes important for daily life in a holy habitude. Christianity sees the sacred in Jesus Christ and its sacraments (and the saints), and Islam focuses sacred on the Koran and the Kaaba.

The pilgrimage to Mount Tomor in Albania: A changing sacred place in a changing society
From the beginning of the 20th century, the veneration of a sacred tomb of Abbas Ali – the mythical son of Ali and step-brother of Hasan and Hüseyin – on the top of Mount Tomor in Southern Albania has been controlled by the members of the Bektashi Order of dervishes. Based on field research as well as on written sources, I look at the pilgrimage as linked to human and historical contingencies, and as a ritual space allowing a multiplicity of perceptions and meanings, with individual and collective dimensions, mediatizing spatial and temporal practices. In the post-socialist context, the mobility that affects the Albanian society has an important impact on the pilgrimage: concerning the geographical and social origin of the pilgrims, the spatiality of the sacred place itself whose center of gravity is no longer the top of the Mountain, and the competing ideas of significance given to the place (sacred, Bektashi, national, but also regional and linked to the universe).

Pilgrimages in Bulgaria after 1989
The transformations in political and social life after 1989 mark the beginning of a new period in the development of religiosity in Bulgaria. This paper focuses on a certain religious segment – the pilgrimage, which is the field where sacrality and mobility intertwine in the most visible way. The research presents various types of pilgrim destinations: traditional Orthodox pilgrimage centers, new Christian cult centers, New Age pilgrimage places. Some specific features of Bulgarian New Age pilgrimages will be outlined, such as the interest in “Thracian” or “Proto-Bulgarian” sites and beliefs, the influence of Dănovism and the inclusion of Orthodox religious centers in New Age sacred geography. The text also discusses trends towards the emergence of new centers of worship, and temporary ones formed as a result of visits to cult objects (relics, remains, miraculous icons) in a given location.

Inventing Religion – New Spirituality and Sacred Places in Bulgaria
This article is dedicated to the process of invention of sacrality and its functions in the context of the new spirituality/new religious movements in Bulgaria. It examines two sacred places related to two spiritual movements from modernity/postmodernity – the Seven Rila Lakes, honored by the White Brotherhood, and the rocks of Belogradchik important to the movement of Unified Teaching. The paper analyzes the pilgrimage related to them in the context of sacred places and invented religions, attempting to present their functions for the construction and life of the spiritual communities.
