Markus Viehbeck
is a Senior Scientist at the Department of South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies, University of Vienna
Markus Viehbeck studied Indology and Religious Studies at LMU Munich and completed his PhD in Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna (2012), where he now serves as Senior Scientist, Vice Director of Studies, and coordinator of the CIRDIS research network. His research focuses on Tibetan and Himalayan religion, history, and culture, with particular interest in the Tibetan Buddhist canon, manuscript studies, processes of transcultural exchange, and archival practices. His publications include Polemics in Indo-Tibetan Scholasticism (2014), the edited volume Transcultural Encounters in the Himalayan Borderlands (2017), and two co-authored monographs on Tibetan Buddhist manuscripts (2021 & 2022). He also contributes to the Tibetan Manuscript Project Vienna and the Resources for Kanjur & Tanjur Studies database.
