Uwe Niebuhr
is Independent Scholar (Art History), PhD candidate (South Asian Studies), and Graduated Engineer (Mechanical Engineering)
Uwe Niebuhr studied art history and the languages and cultures of South Asia and Tibet at the University of Vienna and holds a degree in mechanical engineering. Since 2022, he has been pursuing a PhD in South Asian Studies on René Nebesky-Wojkowitz and methods of Himalayan research. From 2018 to 2023, he was principal investigator in a project on Nebesky-Wojkowitz’s scientific legacy at the Institute for South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies, in cooperation with the Weltmuseum Wien. He researched ephemeral art of the Bön religion and worked as a research associate on projects on the western Himalaya and Afghanistan at CIRDIS at the Institute of Art History. Fieldwork has taken him to India, Mongolia, and Nepal. His research focuses on Buddhist iconography, the art history and material culture of the Himalayas and Tibet, museology, history of science, and research data archiving.
