In der antiken Landschaft Lydien sind besonders viele Inschriften der griechisch-römischen Antike gefunden worden, sei es als Oberflächenfunde, sei es bei archäologischen Ausgrabungen oder bei Bauarbeiten aller Art. Hasan Malay, ehemals Professor an der Ägäis-Universität (Izmir), hat diese Landschaft in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten häufig besucht und dabei viele Inschriften aufgenommen (und für ihre museale Bewahrung gesorgt), deren Entdeckung ihm vor allem von der Landbevölkerung mitgeteilt worden war; auch eine Rettungsgrabung im Heiligtum der Thea Larmene unter seiner Leitung zeitigte Inschriftenfunde. Aus dem gesamten Fundus legen er und Georg Petzl, ehemals Professor an der Universität zu Köln, in diesem ETAM-Band über 200 unpublizierte Inschriften vor, die Bezug zum religiösen Leben haben. Der zeitliche Rahmen reicht vom Hellenismus über die besonders stark vertretene römische Kaiserzeit bis in die christliche Antike. Die Texte gehören unterschiedlichen Kategorien an: ein Heiliges Gesetz, Bericht über Finanzierung von Artemis-Mysterien, ein Hymnus, mehrere Orakel, Grenzsteine, Ehreninschriften, Bau- und Grabinschriften, besonders zahlreiche Weihungen, darunter auch „Beichtinschriften“ (mit der bisher einzig bekannten, die metrisch abgefasst ist). Angeordnet ist das Material in geographischer Gliederung (bei der Orientierung hilft die beigegebene Karte). Einzelne ländliche Heiligtümer werden in eigenen Kapiteln (XVI; XXI–XXIII; XXV) behandelt und dort auch anepigraphe Fundstücke (Reliefs und Skulpturen) mit eingeschlossen. Der Band enthält viele bemerkenswerte Dokumente, die mit Fotos illustriert sind und für die Übersetzungen und ausführliche Kommentare geboten werden. Detaillierte Indices erschließen dem Benutzer das facettenreiche Material. The ancient area of Lydia has yielded a particularly rich epigraphical harvest of Greek-Roman Antiquity. Inscriptions were found on the surface of ancient sites, during archaeological excavations or discovered in the course of construction work. Over the past decades Hasan Malay (former professor at the Ege University, Izmir) travelled frequently in that region and took copies and photographs of many inscribed stones which were often brought to his attention by inhabitants of remote villages; he also arranged the stones’ transport to museums. Further inscriptions were brought to light during a rescue excavation organised by him of the sanctuary of Thea Larmene. From this collection Hasan Malay and Georg Petzl (former professor at the Cologne University) present in this ETAM volume more than 200 unpublished inscriptions, which refer to the religious life. The earliest ones belong to the Hellenistic period, the majority of them were written in the Roman Imperial period, the latest ones date from the Christian Antiquity. The texts belong to various categories: A Lex Sacra, a report on the financing of the mysteries of Artemis, a hymn, a number of oracles, boundary stones, honorific, building and funerary inscriptions, and, above all, dedications, amongst which a good number of “confession inscriptions” (with the so far only one written in verses). The material is presented according to a geographical order, the accompanying map helps to locate the individual sites. A number of rural sanctuaries are dealt with in special chapters (XVI; XXIXXIII; XXV); anepigraphic finds (reliefs and sculptures), which were made in these places, are attached in appendices. All the documents – many of them outstanding in novelty – are illustrated by photographs, translated and furnished with commentaries. Detailed indices will be welcomed by the reader wishing to get an overview of the rich material.

In this study, the author presents 219 unpublished Greek\nand Latin inscriptions which he discovered during his\ntrips in Asia Minor. Additionally,some previously known\ntexts are here revised. The texts, most of which come\nfrom Lydia, the traditional research area of the Austrian\nAcademy, are represented in geographical order.\nThe material includes some royal documents, public and\nindividual honors, ephebic lists, milestones, a letter by\na proconsul, dedications and funerary inscriptions with\nrich onomastic evidence, and records of constructions.\nSome inscriptions, on the other hand, give the names\nof deities whose cults are unknown so far, new toponyms\nand associations. The work has been supported by\ndetailed indices, drawings, a map and 246 illustrations n this study, the author presents 219 unpublished Greek and Latin inscriptions which he discovered during his trips in Asia Minor. Die Landschaft Lydien zählt zu den ältesten Arbeitsgebieten der Kleinasiatischen Kommission, das Museum von Manisa liegt in diesem Gebiet und verfügt über eine besonders umfangreiche Sammlung antiker Denkmäler. Dieser Band ist eine unentbehrliche Ergänzung zu den von Peter Herrmann in der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissen-schaften veröffentlichten TAM-Faszikeln V/1 und V/2 (Nord-ost- und Nordwest-Lydien), daher ein Ergänzungsband zu den TAM im eigentlichen und ursprünglichen Sinne.
