Die regionale Entwicklung Zyperns und die Veränderungsprozesse auf der Insel sind ein spannendes Thema das im Rahmen des Projektes Zypern von SCIEM 2000 in den letzten Jahren untersucht wurde. Louise Maguire bearbeitet in diesem Buch materielle Kultur mit einer neuen Methode, indem sie die Dekoration bemalter Keramikwaren einer minutiösen Merkmalsanalyse hinsichtlich der Linienführung unterzieht. Die äußerst detailreiche Studie ist ein frischer Ansatz um grundlegende technologische Entwicklungen zu entwirren und erweitert unsere Kenntnisse über gesellschaftliche Vorgänge während der Mittleren und Späten Bronzezeit auf Zypern. Die analysierten Warengruppen sind White Painted Wares (WPII – VI, inklusive Variationen), Proto White Slip und White Slip Wares. In dieser Studie wird deutlich sichtbar, dass Aufschlüsselungen von Waren nach unterschiedlichen Bemalungspraktiken neue regionale und chronologische Interpretationen erfordern. This book by Louise Maguire represents a new departure from the traditional analysis of material culture; she has analysed pottery decoration by looking at traces of painting practices. This very meticulous and detailed study is a fresh approach which may help to disentangle some crucial technological developments and expand our knowledge of social behaviour on the island during the Middle Cypriot and Late Cypriot periods. The painting practices of White Painted Wares (WP II – VI and their variants), Proto White Slip and White Slip Ware have been painstakingly deconstructed. It is evident from this study, that the discovery of different brushstroke behaviour across the ware groups, has an impact on current regional and chronological interpretations. The book consists of 4 sections describing individual items from each ware group, conclusions and contains 72 figures and 15 colour plates.

Seit 1966 haben die einzigartigen Entdeckungen in Tell el-Dabʿa, die von Professor Manfred Bietak gemacht wurden, bei Archäologen und Ägyptologen weltweit für Begeisterung gesorgt. Aus seiner Rekonstruktion der Geschichte des Fundortes als die Siedlung Avaris, Hauptstadt der Hyksos, geht eindeutig hervor, daß diese Stadt von der Gründung bis zum Niedergang ein wichtiges Zentrum von internationaler Bedeutung war.



Der internationale Charakter des Fundortes während der mitteleren Bronzezeit wird unter anderem durch die Entdeckung grosser Mengen von zypriotischer Keramik bezeugt, dem größten Fundvolumen, das bisher in Ägypten erfaßt wurde.



Vorliegendes Buch legt die Keramik im Zusammenhang mit den Befunden von Tell el-Dabʿa vor und untersucht das Vorkommen in Bezug auf die Verbreitung der zypriotischen Keramik in der Levante. Das Spektrum der zypriotischen Ware umfaßt hervorragende Beispiele der White Painted Ware (z. B. White Painted Pendent Line Style, White Painted Cross Line Style and WP V) sowie Red on Black Ware, Plain Ware and Cypriot Bichrome Ware. Das Buch katalogisiert die gesamte Repertoire der zypriotische Keramik und vergleichbare zypriotische Funde von über 40 Fundorten in der Levante; es präsentiert eine neue Perspektive hinsichtlich der Verbreitung der zypriotischen Keramik während der Mittel - und Spätbronzezeit. Ferner behandelt es die weltreichenden Implikationend bezüglich der Verwendung der Keramik bei der Festlegung eines chronologischen Systems sowie die Probleme, die im Zusammenhang mit den herkömmlichen Klassifizierungssystemen für zypriotische Keramik entstehen. Since 1966, the remarkable discoveries at Tell el-Dabʿa, unearthed by Professor Manfred Bietak have excited archaeologists and Egyptologists worldwide. In reconstructing the history of the site there is clear evidence that Avaris was a major centre of international significance, from its inception to its demise.



A testimony to its internationalism in the Middle Bronze Age period is the discovery of relatively large quantities of Cypriot pottery, the largest collection hitherto discovered in Egypt.



This publication documents this pottery in light of the discoveries at Tell el-Dabʿa and examines the assemblage in the context of the circulation of Cypriot pottery in the Levant. The spectrum of Cypriot wares includes fine examples of the White Painted tradition (e.g. White Painted Pendent Line Style, Cross Line Style and WP V) as well as Red on Black, Plain Ware and Cypriot Bichrome.



This book catalogues the full repertoire of Cypriot wares and comparative material from over 40 sites in the Levant, presenting a new perspective on the circulation of Cypriot pottery in the Middle and Late Bronze Ages. It also addresses the wider implications of the use of pottery in establishing chronological frameworks and problems which arise in adhering to the traditional classification systems devised for Cypriot pottery.
