The Vienna Yearbook of Population Research 2013 examines the determinants of exceptional human longevity, integrating perspectives from genetics, socio-environmental influences and lifestyle. It examines statistical methods, "longevity hotspots" such as Sardinia and Okinawa, and unique groups such as centenarians and academics. Contributions cover modal age at death, familial factors such as fertility and parental life expectancy, and specific risk groups, including long-lived smokers. By advancing the understanding of longevity patterns, the special issue provides new insights into the complex interplay of biological, social, and environmental factors shaping human lifespan.

The 2012 issue of the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research presents research focusing on the links between education and global fertility change and their implications. The long-term rise of education levels is among the key drivers of fertility decline in the course of the demographic transition. Articles in this volume pay special attention to changes in school attainment and the implications for the timing and level of fertility. Several key channels through which education growth and changing education balance between couples affect fertility are investigated, ranging from its effects on female financial autonomy to the effects on marriage markets characterised by high levels of educational homogamy. The studies featured in this volume also cover fertility and family transitions and their consequences in different stages of the life course, including spousal and parental roles among student populations, contrasting pathways to family formation in different cultures of Japan and Germany and the consequences of family size for cognitive abilities later in life.

Laut Statistik Austria betrug die Wohnbevölkerung Österreichs im Jahresdurchschnitt 2010 genau 8.387.742 Personen (Statistik Austria 2011b). (Die Ergebnisse der registerbasierten Volkszählung 2011 waren zum Zeitpunkt der Drucklegung dieses Beitrags noch nicht verfügbar.) Diese Menschen und ihre gegenwärtige Gliederung nach gewissen Eigenschaften (Strukturmerkmalen) sind die Basis der folgenden Analyse.

Im Zeitverlauf dominiert ein Megatrend: die österreichische Bevölkerung altert. Belief sich der Anteil der über 65-jährigen im Jahr 1950 noch auf 11%, so lag er 2010 bei 18% und wird sich in den kommenden Jahrzehnten noch weiter deutlich erhöhen. Gleichzeitig ging der Anteil der unter 15-jährigen von 23% auf 15% zurück (Statistik Austria 2011a). Ein Vergleich der Alterspyramiden für 1950 und 2010 macht diese Entwicklung deutlich. In traditionellen Gesellschaften mit hohen Geburtenraten (wie in den Ländern Europas um 1900 oder in vielen Entwicklungsländern heute) sehen Bevölkerungspyramiden tatsächlich noch wie Pyramiden aus. Der Geburtenrückgang und der kontinuierliche Anstieg der Lebenserwartung haben in Österreich dazu geführt, dass das Ganze heute eher wie ein "Bevölkerungsdiamant" aussieht, in dem die mittleren Altersgruppen am stärksten vertreten sind.

The 2011 issue of the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research explores reproductive decision-making, focusing on theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches to fertility preferences, fertility norms and motivations, family policies and actual fertility from individual, couple and aggregate perspectives. The contributions address various aspects of fertility decisions, including individual choices, couple interactions, societal influences, gender norms, and policy impacts. Most contributions stem from the REPRO project (“Reproductive decision making in a macro–micro approach”) on the antecedents and outcomes of fertility intentions. They tackle the complexity that emerges from the interaction between individual (including couple-level) and aggregate-level factors which jointly determine fertility decisions and the related birth outcomes. Many contributions are grounded in the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) by Ajzen and Fishbein, which is also critically assessed in the eight invited contributions in the “Demographic Debate” section.

The 2010 issue of the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research looks at the connections between education and demography, with a broader ambition of developing the subfield of the “demography of education”. The volume opens with three “Demographic Debate” contributions that arrive at contrasting conclusions about the “impact” of education on population dynamics and heterogeneity. Partly, this disagreement revolves around the question: how much does it matter whether education “causes” the demographic heterogeneity and how much it is merely a signal of some deeper underlying “cause” of heterogeneity. The articles in this volume address the relationship between education and fertility (looking at childlessness, fertility level, and fertility timing), education and wealth disparities in mortality and morbidity, measurement of education progression, and education disparities in ethno-cultural groups. The volume also introduces The IIASA-VID global reconstructions and projections of educational attainment by age and sex.

Other contributions cover fertility and family size ideals, mortality, population ageing, population projections and reconstructions, regional consequences of population decline, and models of age dynamics. Two studies not focused on Europe cover uncertain future of Chinese population and a global reconstruction of population by age, sex and level of educational attainment.

The third issue of the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research examines critical issues in demography, especially fertility and ageing. The debate section focuses on the potential impact of population ageing on economic productivity and presents contrasting perspectives. The original articles cover topics as diverse as the narrowing gender gap in life expectancy in Canada and Austria, the relationship between social capital and fertility in Bulgaria, and factors influencing later childbearing in France. Fertility trends in Austria are analysed in detail, including differences by educational attainment and urban-rural areas. Further articles consider the fiscal implications of an ageing population in Austria and whether ageing necessarily leads to an increase in the prevalence of disability. The issue concludes with an overview of recent demographic and fertility trends in Austria.
