Die Menschheitsgeschichte war und ist eng mit dem Kamel verbunden, denn ohne dieses bemerkenswerte Tier hätten Menschen in den ariden Zonen Asiens und Nord-Afrikas kaum überlebt. Die Beforschung der einzigartigen Interaktion zwischen Mensch und Kamel ist daher an der ÖAW seit ihrer Gründung vor rund 160 Jahren etabliert. Dieses Konferenz- und Publikationsprojekt verpflichtet sich dieser Forschungstradition und stellt die Mensch/Nutztierinteraktionen rund um das Kamel ins Zentrum des Erkenntnisinteresses. Die Publikation zum Kamel ist als internationales und interdisziplinäres Unterfangen angelegt und soll einen Wissensaustausch zwischen Natur- und Humanwissenschaften fördern. Die Diskussionen rund um Alt-Welt Kamele (Dromedar, Baktrisches Kamel und Wildkamel) umfassen die Themen Herkunft und Domestizierung, Zucht, Haltung und Handel, sowie die Bedeutung von Kamelen in sozio-ökonomischer Hinsicht, in der Volks- und Veterinärmedizin, der Musik, sowie die Erhaltung der letzten Wildkamel Populationen.
