Dieser Band umfasst acht Beiträge aus dem Gebiet früher Tibetstudien mit einer stark sozialanthropologischen und historischen Perspektive. Der thematische Fokus liegt auf dem Sozialen und Religiösen bei der Entstehung von tibetischen Gesellschaften, hauptsächlich zwischen dem 7. und 17. Jh. Dies beinhaltet Untersuchungen der Konzeption der Herrscher des frühen Tibet des 7.–9. Jh. und ihrer Bestattungsbräuche, sozio-politische Topographie, die Adoption des Buddhismus als Staatsreligion im 8. Jh. und seine Rolle bei der Gründung des westtibetischen Königreichs im 10. Jh. ebenso wie Ritualtraditionen in späteren regionalen Kontexten (nach dem 11. Jh.).

   Die wichtigste Hypothese, die den Beiträgen zugrundeliegt, ist die unauflösliche Verbindung des Religiösen mit dem Sozialen, die in Formulierungen von „Brauch“ und „Tradition“ und einer Konzeption von „sakralem“ Königstum und verwandten Ritualpraktiken in vorbuddhistischen Kontexten reflektiert wird, die mit der Einführung und Etablierung des Buddhismus modifiziert und in postdynastischer Zeit an verschiedene regionale Kontexte angepasst wurden.

   Die Basis dieser Studien besteht in bis jetzt wenig untersuchten schriftlichen Primärquellen (tibetischen Texten, Manuskripten und Inschriften) und einer Fülle von jeweils neu dokumentierten archäologischen, geographischen und ethnographischen Daten. Neben dem ausgeprägten Augenmerk auf Primärquellen besteht ein weiterer innovativer Aspekt des gesamten Bandes in der erfolgreichen Anwendung frischer sozialanthropologischer Konzepte des Sozialen und Religiösen auf eine Vielfalt von historischen Kontexten in Tibet, insbesondere des 7.–9. Jh. This volume contains eight contributions belonging to the field of early Tibetan studies with a strong social anthropological and historical perspective. The thematic focus is related to the social and the religious in the making of Tibetan societies primarily between the 7th and 17th century. This includes studies of the conception of the rulers of early (7th–9th century) Tibet and their burial customs, the socio-political topography, the adoption of Buddhism as state religion in the 8th century and its role in the foundation of the West Tibetan kingdom in the 10th century as well as ritual traditions in later (post-11th century) regional contexts. 

   The main hypothesis underlying the contributions in this volume is the indissoluble connection of the religious with the social, which is reflected in formulations of "custom" and "tradition" and a conception of "sacred" kingship and related ritual practices in pre-Buddhist contexts that were modified with the introduction and establishment of Buddhism and adapted in post-dynastic times to various regional contexts.

   In these studies, the basis is formed by so far little-researched primary written sources (Tibetan texts, manuscripts, and inscriptions) and a wealth of newly documented first-hand archaeological, geographic, and ethnographic data. Beside the keen attention to primary sources throughout the volume, another strongly innovative aspect consists of the successful application of fresh concepts in the social anthropology of the social and the religious to a variety of historical, in particular 7th–9th century Tibetan contexts.

Dieser Sammelband befasst sich in 16 Beiträgen mit frühen, aus dem 10.–13. Jh. stammenden buddhistischen Monumenten des historischen Westtibet. Die Studien beruhen einerseits auf interdisziplinär ausgerichteten Feldforschungen in Ladakh, Spiti, Kinnaur, Tsamda und Purang (heute teils auf chinesischem, teils auf indischem Staatsgebiet liegend), andererseits auf der Erschließung und textkritischen Herausgabe von wichtigen, bislang wenig bekannten oder nicht leicht zugänglichen historiographischen Schriftquellen, u.a. von Werken des Guge Paṇḍita Drakpa Gyaltsen (1415–1486/98), die teils der Gründungsphase des westtibetischen Königreiches und dem königlichen Mönch Yesche Ö (947–1019), der religiös-politischen Hauptfigur im Westtibet des 10./11. Jh., gewidmet sind. Inhaltliche Schwerpunkte der Studien bilden nach einer einleitenden Übersicht der makrohistorischen Entwicklungen in Westtibet vom 7.–15. Jh. Beiträge zur Archäologie, Architektur, Kunst- und Gründungsgeschichte des Klosters Nyarma (10. Jahrhundert, maßgeblich erweitert und vertieft. This edited volume with 16 original contributions is devoted to early, 10th–13th-century Buddhist monuments of historical Western Tibet. The results are, on the one hand, based on in-depth interdisciplinary field studies in Ladakh, Spiti, Kinnaur, Tsamda und Purang (today partly on Chinese, partly on Indian territory), and on the other hand on the critical edition and analysis of hitherto unknown or inaccessible historiographical texts, including works by Guge Paṇḍita Drakpa Gyaltsen (1415–1486/98), which are dedicated partly to the foundation phase of the West Tibetan kingdom and to the royal monk Yeshe Ö (947–1019), the leading religio-political figure in Western Tibet in the 10th/11th century. Preceded by an outline of macro-historical developments in Western Tibet from the 7th to the 15th century, the studies focus on the archaeology, architecture, art history and foundation phase of the monastery of Nyarma (10th century) (Ladakh), in addition on stelae in Purang and Tsamda dating to the 9th and 10th centuries, newly discovered murals at Tabo monastery in Spiti, illuminated Prajñāpāramitā MSS from Tabo and Pooh (in Upper Kinnaur), as well as wall-paintings and accompanying inscriptions in the Zhag cave temple (Tsamda) from the 13th century. This volume contributes significantly to the wider and deeper understanding of the religious, cultural, political and social developments of the entire West Tibetan language area, in particular during the formative phases of the West Tibetan kingdom from the 10th to the 13th centuries.

Der Tagungsband des dritten internationalen SEECHAC-Kolloquiums (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, 25.–27. November 2013, Wien) ist dem Thema „Interaktion im Himalaya und Zentralasien“ gewidmet. Das Kloster Khortschag (Tibetisch 'Khor chags, Chinesisch Kuojia) in Purang, Westtibet (Präfektur Ngari, Autonome Region, VR China), gegründet zu Ende des 10. Jahrhunderts unserer Zeitrechnung, ist eines der drei ältesten buddhistischen Klöster des historischen Westtibet. In der Nähe des heiligen Berges Kailas gelegen, ist das Kloster bis heute in ganz Tibet wegen seines Erbes alter sakraler Kunst berühmt. Die visuelle Dokumentation seiner Architektur und der in Khortschag erhaltenen Wandmalereien, Skulpturen und Ritualgegenstände sowie der religiösen und festlichen Traditionen, die in diesem Band mit großteils neuen Informationen zum ersten Mal vorgestellt und erläutert werden, bietet reichhaltiges Studienmaterial für alle, die diesen historisch bedeutenden Ort besuchen oder studieren. Founded in the late 10th century CE, Khorchag monastery in Purang, Western Tibet (Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, PR China), is one of the three earliest Buddhist monasteries of historical Western Tibet and, due to its ancient sacred artistic heritage, renowned all over Tibet. The detailed visual documentation of the architecture, wall-paintings, sculptures and ritual paraphernalia extant in Khorchag, as well as the intimate visual documentation of ritual and festival traditions, provides rich and to a large degree new information and substantial study material for visitors and students of this important place. Most of this material is recorded, presented and discussed in this volume for the first time. Including oral and written accounts of relationships in pre-modern periods as well as reports on recent achievements in preserving and restoring specific religious and cultural traditions, this volume gives an overview of the history, socio-economic organisation, building structure, art history and religious traditions of this monastery. It also provides insight into the cultural heritage of the village population, such as local song and dance traditions and performances of religious plays.

In dieser Arbeit wird zum ersten Mal die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft in Spiti und im oberen Kinnaur (Himachal Pradesh, Indien) über einen langen Zeitraum rekonstruiert, und zwar anhand einer ihrer zentralen Strukturen, der sozio-ökonomischen Organisation. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Studie steht die Untersuchung des Dorfes Tabo im Spitital und der umliegenden tibetischsprachigen Gebiete im nordwestlichen Himalaya. In methodologischer Hinsicht handelt es sich um eine Kombination von sozialanthropologischer Forschung und der Auswertung von historischen und rezenten Schriftquellen (teils aus dem Bestand des über 1000-jährigen buddhistischen Klosters in Tabo).

Die im Kern auf Modellen der peasant theory aufbauenden theoretischen Konzepte und Perspektiven der Arbeit werden – durch die Einbeziehung von Erkenntnissen der sozialanthropologischen Tibetforschung zur gesellschaftlichen Strukturierung durch religiöse Institutionen wie buddhistische Klöster und Tempel – wesentlich weiterentwickelt. 

Die Darstellung der Ethnographie des Untersuchungsgebiets bildet zusammen mit der Untersuchung des Landrechts, in Verbindung mit dem Steuer- und Abgabensystem, einen zentralen Bestandteil in der Analyse der historischen und gegenwärtigen Beziehungen zwischen den jeweiligen Machthabern und den landwirtschaftlichen Produzenten (peasants). In diesem Zusammenhang ist auch die hier erstmalig erschlossene politische Geschichte der Region essentiell. In insgesamt zwölf Exkursen werden außerdem detailliert einzelne Schwerpunktthemen (wie z. B. Steuer- und Verwaltungswesen, unfreie Arbeit, regionaler, supra- und transnationaler Wollhandel, Ökonomie von buddhistischen Klöstern, Entwicklung der Bevölkerungszahl) in einem betont vergleichenden Fokus untersucht.

 This study reconstructs for the first time the development of society in Spiti and in Upper Kinnaur (Himachal Pradesh, India) over a long historical period on the basis of one of its central structures, that is, socio-economic organisation. The focus of this study is the peasantry of Tabo village in Spiti Valley and the adjacent Tibetan-speaking areas in the northwestern Himalayas. From a methodological perspective this book is primarily the result of a combination of social anthropological fieldwork and the analysis of historical and contemporary written sources (partly from the holdings of the over 1,000-year-old Buddhist monastery of Tabo). The theoretical concepts and perspectives of this work, building at the core on peasant theory models, are considerably developed further by including and integrating findings from social anthropological research on Tibet, in particular the fundamental importance of religious institutions such as Buddhist monasteries and temples for the structuring of the social order. The account of the ethnography of the region forms together with the investigation of the system of land ownership in association with the system of taxes and dues a central component of the analysis of the historical and current relations between the power-holders and the agricultural producers (peasants). It is also in this context that the delineation of the political history of the region which is undertaken here for the first time plays an essential role. Moreover, in altogether 12 excursuses selected key topics (such as administrative and taxation system, corvée labour, regional, supraregional and transnational wool trade, economy of Buddhist monastic communities and monasteries, development of population figures) are studied from a strong comparative perspective.

Der vorliegende Band präsentiert in neun Beiträgen, mitsamt einer thematischen Einleitung von Gabriela Kiliánová, Resultate neuer empirischer und theoretischer Forschungen zum Thema Ritual und die Bedeutung, die es für Durchführende und Beteiligte, für einzelne soziale Gruppen oder für eine ganze Gesellschaft innehat. Die Fallstudien von Tatiana Bužeková, Gebhard Fartacek, Andre Gingrich, Christian Jahoda, Eva-Maria Knoll, Maria-Katharina Lang, Helmut Lukas und Joanna Pfaff-Czarnecka stellen einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum gegenwärtigen Diskurs über rituelle Performanzen dar, deren Kraft und Wirksamkeit ihnen eine andauernde Faszination in der sozialanthropologischen Forschung und darüber hinaus verleiht. Während die AutorInnen ihre Fallstudien von unterschiedlichen theoretischen Standpunkten aus und mit verschiedenen methodischen Ansätzen untersuchen, eint sie die Frage, inwieweit Rituale eine mögliche Quelle für Konflikt und Konsens in der Gesellschaft sein können, und auch, inwiefern sie dazu beitragen können, Konflikte zu vermeiden und Konsens herbeizuführen. Die Antworten auf diese Frage resultieren in einer zweiten Gemeinsamkeit dieses Bandes, das Thema Ritual notwendigerweise vor dem Hintergrund sozialer Beziehungen und lokaler oder globaler ökonomischer, politischer, ideologischer und kultureller Prozesse zu analysieren. Die Forschungsergebnisse zeigen, dass die Gesellschaften in Asien und Europa auf ihrem Weg zur multiplen Moderne zahlreiche Krisen durchlaufen, in denen ökonomische Interessen, politische Ziele, ideologische Konzepte und Wertvorstellungen unterschiedlicher sozialer Gruppen oder Individuen in potenziellen oder offenen Konflikten aufeinandertreffen. Dabei funktionieren Rituale in unterschiedlicher Form: einerseits als Reflex oder Auslöser von Konflikten, andererseits als Faktor, der Konflikte limitiert und tendenziell sozialen Zusammenhalt fördert. The present volume gathers nine papers that present new empirical data and theoretical findings on the significance of ritual for performers and participants, for certain social groups or for an entire society. Starting with an introduction by Gabriela Kiliánová, the case studies by Tatiana Bužeková, Gebhard Fartacek, Andre Gingrich, Christian Jahoda, Eva-Maria Knoll, Maria-Katharina Lang, Helmut Lukas and Joanna Pfaff-Czarnecka contribute notably to the current discourse on ritual performances, whose power and effectiveness lend them an enduring fascination for the social anthropological research community and beyond. Although the authors have approached their cases from a variety of theoretical standpoints and methodological approaches, all of them have focused on the question: how does ritual become a possible source of conflict or consensus in society, and also how may it be instrumental in avoiding conflict and bringing about consensus? The search for answers to this question produced a second unifying line in the publication: this was the necessity of tracing ritual against the background of social relationships and local or global economic, political, ideological and cultural processes. As the research findings show, contemporary societies in Asia and Europe on their way to multiple modernity face many crises in which economic interests, political goals, ideological concepts and the values of various social groups or individuals come into potential or open conflict. Ritual meanwhile continues to function in both directions: on the one hand as a reflection or trigger of conflict, on the other hand as a pressure towards the limitation of conflict, tending towards social cohesion.
