The “Wiener Zeitschrift für die Kunde Südasiens / Vienna Journal of South Asian Studies” was founded in 1957 by Erich Frauwallner. The journal was then published jointly by the Department of Indology of the University and the Committee for the Languages and Cultures of South and East Asia (Kommission für Sprachen und Kulturen Süd- und Ostasiens) of the ÖAW, which was the forerunner of the Academy’s Institute for the Intellectual and Cultural History of Asia (Institut für die Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte Asiens, founded in 1991) and has been established at Frauwallner’s initiative in 1956. 

This volume contains papers by S. Katsura, S. Moriyama, H. Lasic, E. Steinkellner, J. Taber, L. McCrea, E. Franco, M. Tang and J. Zamorski, based on their contributions to the panel “Pramāṇa across Asia: India, China, Korea, Japan” held at the XVIIth Congress of the International Association of Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna, August 18–23, 2014. The purpose of the panel was to draw attention to the issue of the transition of Buddhist dialectics, logic and epistemology from South to East Asia and to advance understanding of this process, which – compared to the transmission of these branches of Buddhist learning to Tibet  – has been relatively understudied, at least in scholarship in European languages. Inasmuch as the selected papers present foundational new research on crucial points and larger issues, the volume should spark renewed interest in the exploration of the wide-ranging tradition of Chinese Hetuvidyā, before its South Asian backdrop and beyond.

The proceedings volume of the Fourth International Dharmakirti Conference, held in Vienna in 2005, includes a collection of thirty-six essays devoted to the work of one of the most influential philosophers of India, the sixth-century Buddhist scholar Dharmakirti. It is the next volume in a series of Dharmakirti conference proceedings that includes, to date, Studies in the Buddhist Epistemological Tradition (Vienna 1991) and Dharmakirti's Thought and Its Impact on Indian and Tibetan Philosophy (Vienna 1999). The papers in this volume present research on the Buddhist logical and epistemological tradition in India and Tibet, including its cultural, philosophical and religious significance, and also emphasize the tradition's import on non-Buddhist philosophy and religion. They also report on some of the remarkable (and very important) new textual sources that have become available in recent years, namely, newly discovered Sanskrit texts by Dharmakirti and his followers. The contributions provide a rigorous and detailed overview of tlle astonishing Progress that has been made in understanding the work of Dharmakirti and his successors. Moreover, a number of essays break new ground by demonstrating various non-Buddhist contexts in which Dharmakirti's work was taken up and dealt with critically

The volume presents seventeen papers by different scholars that examine, from an interdisciplinary perspective, questions concerning meditation and yogic perception. The contributions focus on various aspects, such as the nature of consciousness, the relation of body and mind, and health, and bind together the perspectives and approaches of disciplines such as South Asian, Buddhist and Tibetan studies, religious studies, philosophy and the history of philosophy, medieval European history, anthropology and psychology. In contrast to recent interdisciplinary studies on meditation that take the natural sciences as their focal point (notably, quantum mechanics and neurophysiology), this volume uses methods established in the social sciences and humanities as tools for understanding meditative traditions, especially those found in Buddhism and Hinduism.

Yogic Perception, Meditation and Altered States of Consciousness

Das Spitzer-Manuskript ist eine der ältesten Sanskrithandschriften, die an der Seidenstraße gefunden wurde. Das in ihm erhaltene Werk ist ein Unikum; bis jetzt wurden keine weiteren Manuskripte dieses Werkes entdeckt und es ist auch nicht in tibetischer oder chinesischer Übersetzung überliefert. Der vorliegende Band enthält eine Einleitung, die den Forschungsstand zusammenfasst, grammatische, lexikalische und paläographische Aspekte des Werks diskutiert und eine Inhaltsübersicht bietet. \nHierauf folgt eine vollständige Faksimileausgabe der Fragmente zusammen mit ihren Transliterationen. Diese werden ergänzt durch Transkriptionen einiger verloren gegangener Fragmente, die dem Nachlass des Indologen Dr. Moritz Spitzer entnommen wurden. Eine Konkordanz stellt die heutige und frühere Anordnung der Fragmente gegenüber; eine ausführliche Zeichentabelle dokumentiert die Besonderheiten der Ku?a?a-Brahmã -Schrift des Manuskripts. Ein vollständiger Wortindex und eine Studie, die die Rekonstruktion des letzten Teils des Manuskripts zum Ziel hat, beschließen den Band. Neben Themen der buddhistischen Scholastik behandelt das Werk auch eine Zahl nicht-buddhistischer Themen, wie eine Vaise?ika-Theorie der Eigenschaften, die aus anderen Quellen nicht bekannt ist; ferner enthält es u. a. die älteste Liste der Bücher des Mahabharata und eine Aufzählung der vierundsechzig Künste und Wissenschaften. Der letzte Teil des Werkes ist der Dialektik gewidmet.
