Der “Weg” zur Erlösung (“mārga”), ein zentraler Begriff der buddhistischen Praxis und des buddhistischen Denkens, bezeichnet spezifische Verhaltensmuster und Methoden der Praxis, die mit transformativen Kräften und soteriologischen Zwecken verbunden sind. Dieser Band zeigt die Pluralität und Komplexität der buddhistischen Ansichten über den Weg, die sich in der buddhistischen Lehr-, Erzähl- und philosophischen Literatur, in epigraphischen Quellen und ikonographischen Programmen aus Südasien finden. Durch neue Analysen - und nicht durch allgemeine Darstellungen - unterschiedlicher Quellenarten untersucht dieser Band, wie der Weg in den buddhistischen Traditionen Südasiens interpretiert, diskutiert und repräsentiert wurde. Er zeigt die Konturen der Ideologien des Weges auf, die auf unterschiedliche Weise die Bildung und Entwicklung buddhistischer Identitäten in der religiösen und intellektuellen Landschaft des vormodernen Südasiens beeinflusst haben, und trägt dazu bei, die modernen Beschreibungen des buddhistischen Weges zu überdenken.

The “Path” to attain liberation (“mārga”), a central notion of Buddhist praxis and thought, designates specific patterns of behaviour and methods of practice connected with transformative powers and soteriological goals. This volume shows the plurality and complexity of Buddhist views on the Path found in Buddhist doctrinal, narrative and philosophical literature, epigraphic sources and iconographic programmes from South Asia. Through new analyses—rather than general pictures—of different kinds of sources, this volume examines how the Path was interpreted, discussed and represented in Buddhist traditions of South Asia. It traces the contours of ideologies of the Path that have variously influenced the formation and development of Buddhist identities in the religious and intellectual landscape of premodern South Asia and contributes to revisiting modern descriptions of the Buddhist Path.

Die Entstehung und Verbreitung des Tantrismus in Südasien ab Mitte des ersten Jahrtausends n. Chr. hat viele religiöse Traditionen der Region geprägt: die śivaitischen Traditionen, das viṣṇuitische Pāñcarātra, den Mantrayāna-Buddhismus und den Jainismus. Trotz dieser fundamentalen Bedeutung des Tantrismus für die religiöse Entwicklung Südasiens wissen wir bisher nur wenig darüber, wie frühe tantrische Gemeinschaften organisiert waren und welche Stellung sie in der Gesellschaft innehatten. Dieser Sammelband bietet neue Einblicke in die sozio-religiöse Geschichte tantrischer Traditionen. From the middle of the first millennium CE, South Asia saw the emergence and rise of Tantrism within all of its major religious traditions: Śaivism, the Vaiṣṇava Pāñcarātra, the Buddhist Mantrayāna, and Jainism. Despite the fact that Tantrism grew to become such an integral part of the religious landscape, our understanding of how early Tantric communities were actually organized and how they positioned themselves in society is still limited. Dieses Buch beschäftigt sich zunächst mit den historischen und dogmatischen Grundlagen der Religionsphilosophie Dharmakirtis. Es zielt auf den sozialgeschichtlichen Kontext brahmanischer Feindseligkeit gegenüber nicht- oder antivedischen Konfessionen (Kapitel 1), neue Muster buddhistischer Selbstdarstellung (Kapitel 2), neu erfundene Modelle theoretischer und apologetischer Rationalität (Kapitel 3) und die dogmatische Infrastruktur hinter der buddhistischen Epistemologie (Kapitel 4) ab. Die These lautet, dass buddhistischer „Tantrismus“ und buddhistische „Logik“ – zwei mehr oder weniger zeitgenössische Phänomene, die als die größten literarischen Ergebnisse der „frühmittelalterlichen“ Periode bezeichnet werden können – gemeinsame Merkmale aufweisen, die hinsichtlich polemischer Ziele und des Sichverstehens von Interesse sind. Seit dem Ende des fünften Jahrhunderts verloren intrabuddhistische Polemiken an Relevanz (zumindest in ihrer bis dahin herrschenden Form) und rückten zum Teil in den Hintergrund zugunsten inter- oder transkonfessioneller Debatten. Die Abkehr von Abhidharma und der Fokus auf neue, überwiegend nicht-buddhistische Ziele führte zu einem Verzicht auf scholastische, konfessionsspezifische Terminologien und Methoden sowie zu der Entwicklung neuer Modelle für theoretische und apologetische Rationalität: erstens, die Erstellung eines klaren Konzepts der Vernunft im Gegensatz zur autoritativen Schrift; zweitens, der allmähliche Aufbau eines Konzepts für praktische Rationalität im Dienste der apologetischen Absicht, ebenjene Möglichkeit oder Rationalität des buddhistischen Weges zu verteidigen. Letztlich wird geprüft, inwiefern buddhistische Epistemologie überhaupt als buddhistisch bezeichnet werden kann, zieht man ihre tiefere dogmatische Struktur in Betracht. Die Grundlagen buddhistischer Epistemologie – u. a. die apoha-Theorie und die pramana-Lehre – werden als Rationalisierung und apologetisch aktualisierte Version buddhistischer Dogmen interpretiert, die sich auf die Struktur höchster und herkömmlicher Realitäten, auf die kognitiven Grundlagen von Fehler und Fehlerausschluss und auf cintamayi prajña („Einsicht durch Reflexion“) als erlösendes Mittel überwiegend inferentieller/induktiver Ordnung beziehe. This book deals first with the historical and doctrinal foundations of Dharmakīrti’s religious philosophy. It points to a socio-historical context of Brahmanical hostility toward non- and anti-Vedic denominations (chapter 1), new patterns of Buddhist self-diction (chapter 2), reinvented models of theoretical and apologetical rationality (chapter 3), and the dogmatic infrastructure underlying Buddhist epistemology (chapter 4). It argues that Buddhist “Tantrism” and Buddhist “logic,” two roughly contemporary phenomena that can be regarded as the main literary outcomes of the “early medieval” period, share interesting features in terms of polemical targets and self-understanding. Since the end of the fifth century, intra-Buddhist polemics have become less relevant (at least in the form it had had heretofore) and partly receded into the background in favor of inter- or cross-confessional controversies. Departing from Abhidharma and addressing new, predominantly non-Buddhist targets resulted in the abandonment of scholastic, confession-specific terminology and meth¬ods as well as the development of new models of theoretical and apologetical rationality: first, the construction of a clear-cut concept of reason(ing) as opposed to scripture; second, the gradual constitution of a concept of practical rationality that served the apologetic purpose of defending the very possibility, or rationality, of the Buddhist path. Finally, the book examines the extent to which Buddhist epistemology can be said to be Buddhist at all as regards its deeper doctrinal structure. It attempts to interpret the foundations of Buddhist epistemology – the apoha theory, the doctrine of the pramāṇas, etc. – as a rationalization and an apologetically updated version of Buddhist dogmas on the structure of ultimate and conventional realities, on the cognitive bases of error and its elimination, and on the cintāmayī prajñā (“insight born of reflection”) as a salvific means of a predominantly inferential order.

September 2009) stattfand. Er enthält elf Aufsätze von SpezialistInnen auf den Gebieten des Mahayana-Buddhismus (P. Skilling, R. Walser), buddhistischer Epistemologie (V. Eltschinger, H. Krasser, S. Moriyama, S. McClintock), Jainismus (P. Balcerowicz), Mimamsa und früher Vedanta (K. Kataoka, H. David) sowie der Pratyabhijña-Philosophie (I. Ratié, R. Torella). Die Themen der Aufsätze reichen dabei von verschiedenen symbolischen, ästhetischen und institutionellen Mitteln schriftlicher Autorisierung (die lange Zunge des Buddhas, die Gebetskanzel) zu Rational-Choice-Theorien in ethisch-soteriologischen Angelegenheiten, von „Inklusivismus“ zu der Kritik an konkurrierenden Ansprüchen auf die Wahrnehmung des Übersinnlichen. It contains eleven essays by specialists in the fields of Mahāyāna Buddhism (P. Skilling, R. Walser), Buddhist epistemology (V. Eltschinger, H. Krasser, S. Moriyama, S. McClintock), Jainism (P. Balcerowicz), Mīmāṃsā and early Vedānta (K. Kataoka, H. David), and Pratyabhijñā philosophy (I. Ratié, R. Torella). The topics dealt with range from different symbolic, esthetic and institutional means of scriptural authorization (the long tongue of the Buddha, the preaching dais) to theories of rational choice in ethical-soteriological matters, from “inclusivism” to the critique of competing claims to the perception of the supersensible. Besides presenting in-depth contributions on little studied areas of Indian philosophy, this volume sheds unprecedented light on the diversity, persistence and structural homogeneity of the philosophers’ enquiries into the legitimacy and the modalities of religious authority and scriptural testimony. It also bears witness to the strong impact of religious pluralism and competition on the nature and the agenda of Indian philosophy.

Schon sehr früh haben die buddhistischen Denker die Idee eines Selbstes, das über den körperlichen und emotional-geistigen Konstituenten existiert, zu einem ihrer wichtigsten Angriffsziele gemacht. Ihre Kritik gipfelt zunächst in Vasubandhus Abhandlung gegen die buddhistischen Personalisten (frühes 5. Jh. u. Z.). Śāntarakṣita und Kamalaśīla, Philosophen des 8. Jahrhunderts, stellen einen weiteren Meilenstein in der Geschichte der Kritik an einem Selbst und einer Person dar: Ihre Tattvasaṅgraha(pañjikā) enthält die gelehrteste und umfangreichste Darstellung des Themas (wenigstens vor den Nairātmyasiddhi-Monographien von Karṇakagomin und Śaṅkaranandana). Was aber haben Dignāga und Dharmakīrti (6. Jh. u. Z.?) zu dieser hitzigen Debatte beigetragen? Die vorgelegte Studie versucht diese Frage wenigstens teilweise zu beantworten und bietet eine Darlegung von Dharmakīrtis Stellungnahme zu einem Selbst. Die Einleitung stellt seine Ansicht von einem Selbst als dem Kern des Nichtwissens dar. Kapitel 1 widmet sich Dharmakīrtis Kritik der beiden wesentlichen Ausprägungen des buddhistischen Substantialismus, der Lehre von einer Buddha-Natur und der Lehre von einer Person (pudgalavāda). Kapitel 2 stellt seine Methode der Entkräftigung der nicht-buddhistischen Argumente für ein Selbst dar. Kapitel 3 bietet zum Abschluss eine eingehende Darstellung von Dharmakīrtis wichtigstem eigenem Beitrag zum Thema, seinem Nachweis, dass (der Glaube an) die Existenz eines Selbstes eine Erlösung unmöglich macht.  From very early times, the Buddhist intellectuals have made the notion of a self existing over and above the bodily and mental constituents one of their main targets. Their critique first culminates in Vasubandhu’s treatise against the Buddhist personalists (early 5th century CE). The eighth-century philosophers Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla provide another milestone in the history of the mainstream Buddhists’ critique of the self and the person: their Tattvasaṅgraha(pañjikā) contains the most learned and elaborate treatment of the subject (at least before Karṇakagomin’s and Śaṅkaranandana’s Nairātmyasiddhi monographs). But how have Dignāga and Dharmakīrti (6th century [?]) contributed to this heated debate? The present study attempts to answer at least in part this question by offering a monographic account of Dharmakīrti’s position regarding the self. The book’s introduction deals with Dharmakīrti’s view of the self as the paramount expression of nescience. Chapter 1 is devoted to his critique of the two main expressions of Buddhist substantialism, viz. the Buddha-nature teachings and Personalism (pudgalavāda). Chapter 2 presents his way of undermining the non-Buddhists’ arguments in favour of the self. Finally, Chapter 3 provides a detailed account of Dharmakīrti’s most original contribution on the subject, viz. his demonstration that the (belief in the) existence of a self makes salvation impossible.

The present volume provides an annotated English translation of the last section of Dharmakīrti’s Pramāṇavārttikasvavṛtti (PVSV 164,24–176,16, ad stanzas 1.312–340), which includes his final assault on the Mīmāṃsā doctrine of the authorlessness (apauruṣeyatva) of the Veda. Dharmakīrti draws out the apparently fatal consequences of this doctrine: If the Vedic scriptures are without an author, hence without an underlying intention, they can only be meaningless. Even if they have a meaning, it must be supersensible. But then, claiming that the leading Mīmāṃsaka authorities – Jaimini, Śabara – possessed privileged cognitive access to its supersensible meaning is not an option, since the Mīmāṃsaka denies that humans have any supernatural form of knowledge. In short, Dharmakīrti forces his opponent to admit that the Veda is nothing but a mutus liber, a “mute book.” Besides questioning the very possibility of Vedic hermeneutics under Mīmāṃsaka presuppositions, the passage translated contains interesting allusions to Dharmakīrti’s linguistic theory, his views on scriptural authority, his critique of the Veda’s reliability, and his understanding of the transmission of the Veda and Vedic śākhās (“schools”, “recensions”). The section includes Dharmakīrti’s polemics against a mysterious vṛddhamīmāṃsaka (“ancient Mīmāṃsaka”). An introduction (pp. 7–21: “The Place of PVSV 164,24–176,16 in the work of Dharmakīrti,” by V. Eltschinger), a synopsis of contents (pp. 23–30) and two independent essays round off the volume. H. Krasser’s “Logic in a Religious Context: Dharmakīrti in Defence of āgama” (pp. 83–118) sheds new light on Dharmakīrti’s conception of scriptural authority and its indebtedness to Dignāga. J. Taber’s “Dharmakīrti and the Mīmāṃsakas in Conflict” (pp. 119–149) explores the guiding principles of the Mīmāṃsā system of exegesis and assesses the relevance of Dharmakīrti’s arguments against it. Vom buddhistischen Philosophen Dharmakīrti (ca. 600–660) sind sieben Werke im Großteil im originalen Sanskrit erhalten, die am meisten die Bereiche der Logik, der Erkenntnistheorie sowie auch der Buddhologie anbelangen. Das mit eigenem Prosakommentar (Svavṛtti) versehene Pramāṇavārttikam, das aus vier Kapiteln besteht, gilt als Dharmakīrti Frühwerk, und soll zweifellos auch als sein bedeutsamstes Werk betrachtet werden. Im ersten Kapitel des Pramāṇavārttikam widmet Dharmakīrti einen langen Exkurs dem Thema der Begründung der Überlieferungsautorität (āgamaprāmāṇya), in dem der berühmte indische Logiker seine eigene Auffassung der Autoritätsbegründung skizziert und in eine lange Auseinandersetzung mit der orthodoxen und ritualorientierten Schule der Mīmāṃsā eingeht. Dabei handelt es sich um eine verheerende Kritik der sogenannten Unverfasstheit (apauruṣeyetā) des Veda unter Betrachtung von vier Themen: angeblich naturgegebene Beziehung zwischen Wort und Gegenstand/Bedeutung (śabdārthasambandha), Ewigkeit der Vedarezitation (vedādhyayana), Unverfasstheit des „sphoṭa“ (gegen die Grammatiker) und der Phoneme (varṇa). Als Hauptteil bietet die Studie eine annotierte französische Übersetzung der Verse 213–268 sowie des angehörigen Eigenkommentars an. Diese Übersetzung wird soziohistorisch sowie ideengeschichtlich eingeführt, und mit verschiedenen Appendices versehen (unter denen eine kritische Edition der tibetischen Version der Passage). Die Studie hat auch zum Zweck, die Bedeutung Dharmakīrtis Werkes aus seinem historischen, ideologischen sowie auch institutionellen Kontext näher einzubetrachten.  Seven works by the Buddhist philosopher Dharmakīrti (ca. 600–660 CE) are still nearly completely extant in their original Sanskrit. For the most part they deal with logic, theories of perception and Buddhism. The Pramāṇavārttikam with its prose self-commentary (Svavṛtti), consisting of four chapters, is considered an early composition of Dharmakīrti and is without doubt his most important work. In the first chapter of the Pramāṇavārttikam, Dharmakīrti devotes himself to a long excursus concerning the substantiation of scriptural authority (āgamaprāmāṇya). Here the famous Indian logician presents his own thoughts and enters a long contestation with the orthodox and ritual-oriented Mīmāṃsā School. The main part of the present study is an annotated translation into French of the verses 213–268 and their respective commentary. The translation has been undertaken from a historical as well as intellectual perspective and includes several appendixes (among them a critical edition of the Tibetian version of the passage). This volume presents both the first translation of this section of the Pramāṇavārttikam into a Western language and a first fundamental discussion of the doctrines contained therein. The study also intends to appraise more closely the importance of Dharmakīrti's works from their historical and ideological as well as their traditional context.
