The first part of the conference was devoted to the internal structure of massive stars with session 1 dealing with the theoretical aspects of non standard physical processes while session 2 presented the challenges met in stellar modelling when introducing these physical processes. Session 3 was a “state of the art” in atmospheres, mass loss and stellar winds in massive stars. Session 4 presented the pulsation observations in massive stars while session 5 discussed the asteroseismic signatures of the physical processes involved in their internal structure. A final session 6 was essentially focused on the interpretation of the asteroseismic observations of ground-based, MOST and CoRoT targets. JENAM (Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting) ist die größte jährliche Zusammenkunft der europäischen Berufsastronomen, die diesmal im September 2008 in Wien stattfand. Die Konferenz beherbergte neun Minisymposien, wobei eines der Asteroseismologie gewidmet war. Die neuesten Entwicklungen auf diesem Gebiet sind im vorliegenden Band im Rahmen von Übersichts- und Detailartikeln zusammengefasst.

JENAM (Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting) is the largest yearly meeting of Europe's professional astronomer and was hosted in September 2008 in Vienna. The conference contained nine minisymposia, one of them was devoted to asteroseismology. This issue summarizes the latest developments in this field in the form of review and contributed articles.

Neben den halbjährlich erscheinenden regulären Ausgaben mit Beiträgen aus der laufenden Forschung werden auch Sonderausgaben für Konferenzberichte bzw. Programmhandbücher herausgegeben. Volume 157 berichtet über einen wissenschaftlichen Workshop, der im Juni 2008 in Wroclaw, Polen, stattgefunden hat. Thema dieses Workshops war die Interpretation von asteroseismologischen Daten. In dieser Ausgabe wird sowohl die Datengewinnung mit bodengebundenen Teleskopen als auch mit Satelliten diskutiert und die Auswirkungen von Opazität, Konvektion, Rotation und Magnetfeldern auf Sternpulsationen und deren Stabilität erörtert. Modenidentifikation und die Extraktion von Eigenmoden-Frequenzen aus den Daten waren zwei weitere große Themen dieses Workshops. Auch in der Zukunft geplante Projekte wurden vorgestellt und diskutiert.

Die Serie Communications in Asteroseismology (CoAst) stellt eine international gefragte Plattform für wissenschaftliche Publikationen der neuesten Forschungsergebnisse auf dem Gebiet der Asteroseismologie dar. Forschungsgegenstand der Asteroseismologie sind pulsierende Sterne. Neben den halbjährlich erscheinenden regulären Ausgaben mit Beiträgen aus der laufenden Forschung werden auch Sonderausgaben für Konferenzberichte bzw. Programmhandbücher herausgegeben. Das Volume 155 enthält Benutzerhandbücher zweier Softwarewerkzeuge, die der Asteroseismologie gewidmet sind. Es handelt sich dabei um das Webinterface DAS (Database AsteroSeismology) und das Softwaretool FAMIAS (Frequency Analysis and Mode Identification for Asteroseismology). Beide Werkzeuge wurden im Rahmen des von der Europäischen Union gegründeten und finanzierten europäischen Netzwerkes für Helio- und Asteroseismologie (HELAS) mit dem Ziel erstellt, einen benutzerfreundlichen Zugang internationaler Forschungseinrichtungen zu state-of-the-art Methoden der Asteroseismologie zu ermöglichen. Erfolgreiche Asteroseismologie von Sternen auf der Hauptreihe hängt in großem Maße davon ab, dass die Oberflächenstruktur der Pulsationsmoden durch Modenidentifikation bekannt ist. Letztere kann durch Modellierung der Helligkeitsvariationen des Sterns in verschiedenen photometrischen Filtern und der Intensitätsvariationen im Profil von Absorptionsspektrallinien ermittelt werden. Das FAMIAS-Programmpaket bietet als Analysewerkzeug spektroskopischer und photometrischer Zeitseriendaten Werkzeuge, um Pulsationsmoden zu finden und eine Modenidentifikation durchzuführen und so die Pulsationsquantenzahlen, den Grad l und die azimuthale Ordung m zu bestimmen. Die Datenbank DAS enthält eine gut dokumentierte Bibliothek von Lichtkurven und Zeitserienspektren von ausgewählten pulsierenden Sternen. Sie bietet zusammen mit FAMIAS ein komplettes Werkzeugpaket für die Modenidentifikation für Forscher und Studenten, die auf dem Gebiet der Asteroseismologie arbeiten. Mit dieser Sonderausgabe von Communication in Asteroseismology wird das Benutzerhandbuch veröffentlicht. Die gedruckte Version des Benutzerhandbuchs wurde mit EU-Mitteln unterstützt. CoAst volume 155 contains two manuals of software tools dedicated to asteroseismology: the web interface DAS (Database AsteroSeismology) and the software package FAMIAS (Frequency Analysis and Mode Identification for Asteroseismology). Both tools have been developed in the framework of European Helio- and Asteroseismology Network (HELAS), which was founded and is funded by the EU. The aim of the FAMIAS / DAS packages is to enable user-friendly access to state of the art methods for asteroseismology. Successful asteroseismology of stars on the main sequence hotter than the sun is highly dependent on the knowledge of the surface structure of pulsational modes, by means of mode identification. Mode identification can be derived from modeling the luminosity variations of the star in several photometric filters and intensity variations in the profile of absorption lines. FAMIAS is a sophisticated tool for the analysis of spectroscopic and photometric time series to find pulsational modes and the corresponding pulsational quantum numbers: the degree l and the azimutal order m. The database DAS contains a well documented library of light curves and spectroscopic time series data of selected pulsating stars. Together with FAMIAS, it provides a complete package of tools for mode identification to researchers as well as to students, working on the field of asteroseismology. This volume is the printed version of the two manuals and is funded by the EU.

CoAst Vol. 154 is a collection of the conference proceedings of the Delaware Asteroseismic Research Center and Whole Earth Telescope Workshop held in Delaware/USA in 2007. The proceedings provide the discussion of the latest theoretical as well as observational results mainly on white dwarfs.

Furthermore, the European Helio- and Asteroseismic network (HELAS, European Commission's Sixth Framework Program) reports on new tools and structure for scientific exchange among astronomers.

Forschungsgegenstand der Asteroseismologie sind veränderliche und pulsierende Sterne. Neben den halbjährlich erscheinenden regulären Ausgaben mit Beiträgen aus der laufenden Forschung werden auch Sonderausgaben für Konferenzberichte bzw. Programmhandbücher herausgegeben. Diese Sonderausgabe von CoAst widmet sich der technischen Planung sowie dem wissenschaftlichen Hintergrund des ersten Österreichischen Satellitenpaares: UniBrite/BriteAustria. In den Konferenzbeiträgen zum First BRIght Target Explorer Workshop werden Fragen zum optimalen Satellitendesign, der Flugbahn, den Bodenstationen sowie Startmöglichkeiten erörtert. In weiterer Folge werden verschiede Klassen variabler Sterne als mögliche Zielobjekte und Beobachtungsstrategien für die photometrischen Beobachtungen besprochen.

The publication series of Communications in Asteroseismology (CoAst) is one of the most important international journals in the field of asteroseismology. Asteroseismology is the science concerned with stellar pulsation. Every six months, CoAst publishes a newsletter with papers about the latest results and ongoing research projects. Besides these regular issues, special issues such as conference proceedings or software manuals are published in this series. This volume of CoAst covers a wide range of scientific research. The papers in this volume report progress and results of ground based and space borne observations of pulsating stars with photometric and spectroscopic techniques. Contributions on modeling convection and the influence of the new opacities on seismic models add interesting theoretical results to this volume of CoAst.

This is no empty bag! During the last decade, Asteroseismology has grown  to a level where the customary, wonderful informal contacts between different workers in a small field are no longer enough to stay  organized. So, why not bundle our expertise in a more organized way,  apply for financial assistance that individuals could only dream about,  and use some of these funds to support young scientists and allow them  to move between different groups? And to be a bit selfish, why should  you have to reinvent the wheel in your own country in your attempts to  try to persuade the various funding agencies that asteroseismology is an  important astronomical field? The supporting sci entific arguments used  in your proposal have already been written down several times by your  colleagues in other countries. It appears that a loose association of  asteroseismologists needs to be formed to support these and many other  common interests. Enter BAG, the Belgian Asteroseismology Group. Do not  be misled by the unassuming name! Under the leadership of Conny Aerts,  in October, this group invited representatives from different  institutions to Leuven in order to plan an Asteroseismology Society and  to write a joint proposal to the EU to establish a European Network of  Excellence in Asteroseismology (ENEAS). The meeting was a smashing  success with a high level of science. The discussions on details of new  committees and offices and how the offices are to be filled were kept to  a minimum. Such (necessary) discussions make people like me turn and  run away fast. Conny divided the time beautifully. Since the chances of  obtaining EU financing for the ENEAS proposal to the EU regrettably are  small, the formation of an asteroseismological society to assist the  scientists may turn out to have the largest long-term impact. What does  this editorial on the organization of the asteroseismologists have to do  with a Delta Scuti Newsletter? I may be biased in this matter, I admit.  But the growth in our knowledge of the behaviour of Delta Scuti and  related stars has been almost exponential during the last decades. Due  to this work, Delta Scuti stars form one of the main areas in  asteroseismology. Furthermore, it appears that every discovery of a new  type of pulsating variable in the end leads to the same unsolved  astrophysical questions such as mode selection, amplitude and period  variability. The answers to these scientific questions may come from  selecting the suitable pieces of the puzzle from many different types of  stars. Successful asteroseismology means many types of stars, from  solar-type all the way to the hot PG 1159 stars.......... We hope that  you find this issue of the newsletter interesting. The next volume of  the Communications will again be devoted to all aspects of  asteroseismology. So keep the news and articles coming!

The satellite photometry of the _ Scuti star 0² Tau obtained with the Wide- Field Infrared Explorer (WIRE) led to the detection of 12 frequencies of pulsation (Poretti et al. 2002). We examine the available ground-based photometry in the literature to check whether these frequencies are also present. The re-analysis of the 1986 Delta Scuti Network data leads to 10 statistically significant frequencies (amplitude signal/noise ratio greater than 4.0). 9 of these 10 frequencies are in excellent agreement with those detected from space, while the 10th frequency is seen as a peak in the WIRE residuals, though not at a statistically significant level. Previous reports on amplitude variability are confirmed.
