Die Ikonographie des Menschen ist in der vorderasiatischen Prähistorie bislang nur in Ausschnitten behandelt worden. Hierbei standen vor allem die Aspekte von Fruchtbarkeitskulten und Götterbildnissen im Vordergrund, die stets in engem Zusammenhang mit der Sesshaftwerdung seit dem Frühneolithikum gesehen wurden. Die Feldforschungen der letzten 30 Jahre in Vorderasien haben das Spektrum prähistorischer anthropomorpher Darstellungen inzwischen deutlich erweitert, so dass einerseits eine Neubewertung der bisherigen Interpretationsmodelle notwendig geworden ist und andererseits ganz neue Fragestellungen etwa zur Selbstwahrnehmung und Selbstdarstellung des Menschen in den Fokus gerückt werden können. Für ein neues, umfassenderes Verständnis der prähistorischen Ikonographie des Menschen wird in diesem Band der konventionelle Themenkanon zu den Bildwerken durch eingehende Betrachtungen der Fundkontexte, der Bestattungspraxis und der medizinischen Anthropologie in wertvoller Weise ergänzt. Der Fokus liegt hierbei gezielt auf den frühen Epochen vom Epipaläolithikum bis ins frühe Chalkolithikum im Bereich des sogenannten Fruchtbaren Halbmonds, da in diesem Zeitraum sowie in dieser Region neben der Herausbildung von Ackerbau und Viehzucht weitere wesentliche, bis heute wirkende Grundlagen gesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens geschaffen wurden. Im Ergebnis wird deutlich, dass die Ikonographie des Menschen schon in dieser Frühzeit Hinweise auf soziale Hierarchien oder Erkenntnisse zum Geschlechterverhältnis liefern kann. Es lassen sich bereits Tendenzen einer Kanonisierung in den Gestaltungsprinzipien bzw. in der Gestik sowie magisch-religiöse Praktiken erkennen, deren Symbolgehalt womöglich in weiteren Forschungen erschlossen werden kann. Weiterhin wird auch die grundsätzliche Frage, ob in der Ikonographie irdische Menschen dargestellt sind oder nicht doch überirdische Wesen, in verschiedenen Beiträgen ausführlich diskutiert.  The adoption of agriculture and settled village life is one of the most important transitions in prehistory, long viewed as one of the most essential ‘revolutions’ in human history. While traditional grand narratives of agricultural origins and dispersals still remain relevant today, decades of excavation and investigation in western Asia are increasingly challenging and reinterpreting these narratives, revealing diverse pathways in the emergence of Neolithic communities. This volume, arising from a workshop organised at the 2016 ICAANE conference in Vienna, uses new research and theories to shed light on the diversity of early farming communities beyond the Near East, in Anatolia (the Asian part of Turkey) and the Aegean basin. The volume proposes that these regions represent one of the first farming ‘frontiers’ between the agricultural economies in central Anatolia in the 9th millennium BC and farming communities in western Anatolia and the Aegean, which emerged around two thousand years later. The thirteen contributions collected in this volume highlight the diverse trajectories by which societies transitioned to farming on the periphery of one of the great centres of food-plant and animal domestication of the Old World, and allow for the re-evaluation of long-established models in the field of Neolithic archaeology, integrating the area into broader narratives about one of the essential transformations in human history.
