Le iscrizioni greche di Velia

Le iscrizioni greche di Velia
1. Auflage, 2003
The third volume of the Velia studies is devoted to the Greek stone inscriptions at Velia, and represents the first scientific presentation of the whole of this material, whose chronological framework extends from the turn of the sixth to the fifth centuries BC to the first century AD. The volume is broken down into cult, honorary and grave inscriptions, followed by the inscriptions whose contents could not be defined beyond doubt. The first two groups contain a series of inscriptions already published and analysed again here taking into account the research results of the last few years, permitting new insights into urban history. The presentation in detail of the hitherto only limitedly known grave inscriptions allow them to be classified chronologically, and provides important new knowledge for eleatic onomastics and the composition of eleatic society in the Hellenic age. In addition to the scientific edition of the inscriptions, a series of related research problems are discussed. These concern for instance the honorary inscriptions for Parmenides and the School of Doctors or the epicleses of eleatic godheads whose interpretation in the past had often been controversial.
