This volume is dedicated to the stone herms found in Ephesos and an art historical evaluation thereof. In addition to the complete cataloguing of the existing finds, the centrepiece of this work is the typological categorisation of the individual herms, which are found in both private and public settings. For this, the iconography and the assignment to a particular typography or image motif are discussed in a comprehensive analytical section. Dating is undertaken by means of frequently unknown correlations in finds, mostly on the basis of stylistic comparisons or technical details. In addition to the interpretation of the herms of the Nymphaeum Traiani as a balustrade allegorically representing the planets, by classifying the herm types of Ephesos and Curtius C as New Attic designs, the author provides an impetus for further academic discussion. Furthermore, comprehensive research in particular areas of the study of herms supplements the presentation of the material with its focus on Ephesos.
