Mathias Mehofer

is Head of the Archaeometallurgical Laboratory at the Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science at the University of Vienna

Mathias Mehofer, born in 1974, studied prehistory at the University of Vienna after graduating from a mechanical engineering college. His early interest in archaeometallurgy motivated him to attend lectures at the Vienna University of Technology and the Freiberg Mining Academy (Germany). He obtained his doctorate at the University of Tübingen (Germany), supervised by Prof. Dr. E. Pernicka and Prof. Dr. M. Bartelheim. Since 2000 he is head of the archaeometallurgical laboratory of VIAS, University of Vienna. His research focuses on prehistoric and medieval metallurgy, mining archaeology, experimental archaeology and the further development and adaptation of scientific methods for interdisciplinary archaeological research.
