Studien zum Alltagsleben haben die Wohnbedingungen, Essen und Trinken, Kleidung, Hygiene und medizinische Betreuung, die Berufe, das Verkehrswesen, generell Produktion und Konsumtion als zentrale Themen. Der materielle Bereich nimmt hierbei breiten Raum ein, das Objekt hat freilich über seine Sachexistenz hin häufig auch eine geistige Funktion als Träger bzw. Symbol von Vorstellungen oder Wertigkeiten. Das internationale Symposium in Cambridge 2001, welches die Wiener Byzantinistik zu seinen Organisatoren zählte, war deshalb bestrebt, Well-Being / Wohlbefinden als Thematik in seinen materiellen, rechtlichen und philosophisch-religiösen Komponenten als facettenreiches Miteinander zu erfassen. Die dreiundzwanzig Beiträge, welche – nach einer Einführung in den generellen Forschungsstand und zukünftige Perspektiven – in der Aktenpublikation dargeboten werden, behandeln demgemäß u.a. Aspekte wie Stadtplanung, Duftstoffe in der weltlichen und kirchlichen Sphäre, magische Praktiken und Medizinheilige, Kleidung als Prestigeelement und Formen von Überfluss und Verknappung in der byzantinischen Ernährung.
