Dieser reich bebilderte, zweibändige Sammlungskatalog der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek widmet sich jenen Handschriften und Inkunabeln des 15. Jahrhunderts, die in den ehemaligen Ländern der Böhmischen Krone sowie in den Ländern des Deutschen Ordens und der Königreiche Polen und Ungarn illuminiert und/oder gebunden wurden. Er umfasst insgesamt 164 Objekte aus der Sammlung von Handschriften und alten Drucken ebenso wie aus der Musiksammlung, die für die weitere Erforschung der Buchmalerei aus einer explizit kunsthistorischen Perspektive erfasst und aufbereitet wurden. Das Spektrum reicht von Universitätshandschriften bis zu Messbüchern und tschechischen Bibeln, von Gebetbüchern bis zu großformatigen Antiphonarien und Gradualien, Inkunabeln und Sammelhandschriften humanistischer Gelehrter. Die Illuminationen zeugen nicht nur von der Kunstfertigkeit der Künstler und der Kaufkraft der Auftraggeber: Ihre ikonographischen und stilistischen Merkmale erzählen über den Text hinausgehend vom Alltag, vom sozialen Status, von Interessen und Bildungshorizont der Auftraggeber und Künstler, von regionalen Werkstätten und Erwerbungen aus fernen Regionen, von Buch- und Künstlerwanderungen. So entfaltet sich ein buntes Bild der Gesellschaft und ihrer bewegten Geschichte, die von der Spätzeit König Wenzels IV. mitten in die hussitische Bewegung und erste konfessionelle Spaltung Böhmens führt und danach die Zeit des „Hussitenkönigs“ Georg von Podiebrad Revue passieren lässt. This richly illustrated two-volume collection catalogue of the Austrian National Library is dedicated to those manuscripts and incunabula of the 15th century that were illuminated and/or bound in the former lands of the Bohemian Crown, as well as in the lands of the Teutonic Order and the kingdoms of Poland and Hungary. It includes a total of 164 objects from the collection of manuscripts and old prints, as well as from the music collection, which were have been recorded catalogued and prepared for further research into book illumination from an explicitly art-historical perspective. The spectrum ranges from university manuscripts to missals and Czech Bibles, from prayer books to large-format antiphonaries and graduals, incunabula and manuscripts of humanist scholars. The illuminations not only testify to artistry and the patrons' purchasing power: their iconographic and stylistic features go beyond the text and tell of everyday life;, social status;, the interests and educational horizons of the patrons and artists,; regional workshops and acquisitions from distant regions,; book and artist migrations. In this way,The volume thus presents a colourful picture of society and its turbulent history unfolds in the mirror ofas reflected in book art, leading fromextending from the late period of King Wenceslas IV in the midst of the Hussite movement and the first confessional division of Bohemia, through followed by the time of the "Hussite King" George of Podiebrad, when the first Czech incunabula were printed, and to the time of the divided crown under Kings Ladislaus Jagiello and Matthias Corvinus, the collector of humanist literature.

Der Katalog ist jenen Handschriften der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek gewidmet, die für König Wenzel IV. (1361–1419) und den Prager höfischen Kreis entstanden sind. Zusammen mit dem 2004 publizierten, zeitlich wie geographisch wesentlich weiter gefassten Katalog „Mitteleuropäische Schulen III (Böhmen – Mähren – Schlesien – Ungarn, ca. 1350–1400)“ bildet er eine Einheit und schließt die Behandlung der Kunst der Buchillumination in den ostmitteleuropäischen Regionen der zweiten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts ab. 

Die Katalognummern dieses Bandes sind in zwei Abschnitte geteilt: Der erste Teil enthält die astrologischen und astronomischen Handschriften der Regierungszeit König Wenzels IV. (Cod. 2352, 2271 und 2378). Der zweite Teil der Handschriftenbeschreibungen umfasst die beiden prachtvollen Großprojekte Wenzelsbibel (Cod. 2759–2764) und Willehalm-Codex (S. n. 2643), die Goldene Bulle (Cod. 338) sowie kleinere Werke, deren Buchschmuck auf Verbindungen der Auftraggeber zum königlichen Hof in Prag hinweist. Um den Leser mit dem böhmischen Hofstil vertraut zu machen, beinhaltet der Textband des Katalogs Informationen zu allen Illuminatoren bzw. Werkstätten, die im Auftrag des Hofes gearbeitet haben, zu deren Herkunft und Werdegang sowie auch zu den Floratoren. Damit führt der vorliegende Band die grundlegenden Arbeiten Gerhard Schmidts (1969) und Josef Krásas (1971) weiter und legt erstmals eine umfassende Aufzählung der an den Prager Handschriften im Wenzelsumkreis beteiligten Illuminatoren sowie eine Zusammenstellung ihres Oeuvres vor, die nicht nur die Wiener Codices umfasst, sondern möglichst alle in Frage kommenden Bibliotheken berücksichtigt. 

Die Erläuterungen im Textband werden von einem reich illustrierten Tafelband in Farbe und ausführlichen Registern begleitet. The catalog is dedicated to those manuscripts of the Austrian National Library which were commissioned by King Wenceslas IV (1361–1419) and the Prague court. Together with the catalog Central European Schools III (Bohemia – Moravia – Silesia – Hungary, ca 1350–1400), published in 2004, it forms a unit and completes the basic research work concerned with the art of book illumination in the central and eastern European regions during the second half of the 14th century on the basis of the manuscripts held by the Austrian National Library. The catalog entries of this volume are divided into two sections: The first section contains the richly illuminated astrological and astronomical manuscripts made for King Wenceslas IV (Cod. 2352, 2271 and 2378). The second section offers descriptions of the two magnificent projects “Wenceslas’ Bible” (Cod. 2759–2764) and “Willehalm Codex” (S. n. 2643), the “Golden Bull” (Cod. 338), as well as smaller works, whose book decorations refer to close connections between the commissioners and the Royal Court in Prague. In order to make the reader familiar with the Bohemian courtly style, the text includes thorough information on all workshops, their illuminators and filigree drawers who worked on behalf of the court. Thus the present volume provides a first comprehensive list of Prague court manuscripts and illuminators and continues the research of Gerhard Schmidt (1969) and Josef Krása (1971). It gives a compilation of their oeuvre, which includes not only the Vienna codices, but considers all eligible libraries. The explanations of the text volume are accompanied by a richly illustrated volume of color plates as well as comprehensive registers.
