Unter den modernen Medien, die im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts in Iran Eingang fanden, hat sich die Briefmarke als ein besonders wirksames Instrument staatlicher Propaganda erwiesen. Ohne großen Aufwand herzustellen und im Alltag ständig präsent, ist es mit ihrer Hilfe möglich, politische Botschaften zu vermitteln, wobei sich im Laufe der Zeit in den Motiven der Postwertzeichen eine eigene, ebenso komplexe wie einprägsame Bildersprache entwickelt hat. Ihre Bedeutung als offizielles Medium und der Umstand, dass sich anhand dieses Mediums die Entwicklung der politischen Bilderwelt Irans in den vergangenen 150 Jahren lückenlos nachvollziehen lässt, lassen die Briefmarke zu einer wichtigen Quelle werden.

In dieser Arbeit soll untersucht werden, wie sich im Laufe der Zeit diese politische Bildkultur entwickelt hat und wie sich die Entwicklung Irans zum modernen Staat in der offiziellen Ikonographie widerspiegelt. Neben der Frage, wer die Themen und Richtlinien der Briefmarkenpropaganda bestimmt und welche Symbolik der iranische Staat zur Selbstdarstellung auf den Briefmarken entwickelt hat, wird zugleich untersucht, in welchem politischen und kulturellen Umfeld Botschaft und Gestaltung der Postwertzeichen entstanden sind und wie diese die Symbolik der Markenmotive geprägt haben. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird nicht zuletzt der Frage gewidmet, welche Inhalte und Symbole unter den wechselnden Regimen die politische Ikonographie geprägt haben und welche Veränderungen und Kontinuitäten staatlichen Selbstverständnisses sich in den Motiven der Briefmarken feststellen lassen. 

Insofern liefert die Studie nicht nur eine grundlegende Darstellung der Inhalte und Methoden politischer Propaganda in Iran von der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis in die Gegenwart, sondern auch eine Betrachtung der modernen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Geschichte Irans im Spiegel des Quellentypus Briefmarke. Among the modern media which came to Iran during the 19th century, the postage stamp has proven to be a particularly effective instrument of political propaganda. Being contrivable without much effort and permanently present in daily life, stamps were not only able to transmit political messages, but also have developed in their design a complex and memorable iconography. Their importance as an official medium as well as the fact that they allow to comprehend the development of political imagery during the last 150 years without gap have made postage stamps an important historical source.

This study examines, in which way the political iconography of Iran has developed in the course of time and how the official iconography reflects the emergence of a modern state in Iran. Beyond the question who determines the issues and directives of stamp propaganda, it also examines in which political and cultural framework the messages and designs of stamps were developed and in which way this framework has influenced the symbolism of postage stamps. 

Special attention is given to the question which issues and symbols have dominated political iconography under the various political regimes and which changes and continuities in national self-conception have influenced the iconography of postage stamps.

Insofar this study not only presents a constitutive description of the issues and methods of political propaganda in Iran from the middle of the 19th century to the present, but also an examination of the political and social history of Iran as reflected by her postage stamps.
