Ausgehend von einer bibliographischen Rekonstruktion untersucht das Buch die Hofbibliothek der Qongrat-Dynastie von Choresm. Die Bibliothek wurde bei der Eroberung des Khanats Chiwa durch russische Truppen im Jahr 1873 als Kriegstrophäe beschlagnahmt und in die russische Hauptstadt St. Petersburg verbracht. Das Buch besteht aus zwei Teilen: Der erste Teil befasst sich mit dem Wesen und der Funktionsweise dieser Hofbibliothek, dem politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Hintergründen der Entwicklung von Literatur und Buchkultur im Khanat, den Umständen des Abtransports der Manuskripte aus Chiwa und ihrer anschließenden Übergabe an russische akademische Einrichtungen sowie mit methodischen Aspekten der Rekonstruktion der Bibliothek. Der zweite Teil enthält Beschreibungen von Manuskripten, die als aus dieser Bibliothek stammend identifiziert wurden.

Diese Monographie umfasst die Edition und annotierte russische Übersetzung öffentlicher Inschriften Persisch, Türkisch und Arabisch aus dem 11. bis frühen 20. Jahrhundert, die sich in der historischen Landschaft Khorazm in Zentralasien erhalten haben. Der vorliegende Band behandelt erstmals das gesamte bekannte Korpus des erhaltenen Inschriftenmaterials der Stadt Khiva, das zuvor nur etwa zur Hälfte publiziert worden war. Das Buch unterscheidet sich von früheren Arbeiten zur Epigraphik von Khorazm darin, dass es die Inschriften durchgehend in ihrem architektonischen und urbanistischen Kontext präsentiert und ihre kulturelle und soziale Bedeutung als öffentliche Repräsentation untersucht. Dokumentiert wird das gesamte epigraphische Korpus von Khiva durch die Photographien von V.N. Kovrein. This monograph provides the edition, Russian translation and commentary of public inscriptions in Persian, Turkish and Arabic from the 11th to the early 20th century in the historical Central Asian landscape of Khorazm. The publication deals for the first time with the entire corpus of the known preserved epigraphic material of Khiva, of which only about half had been previously published. In contrast to earlier works on the epigraphy of Khorazm, this publication consistently presents the inscriptions in their architectural and urbanistic context and examines their cultural and social significance as public representation. The second part documents the entire epigraphic corpus of Khiva with the photographs of V.N. Kovrein.

Der vorliegende Band stellt die erste detaillierte Studie über religiöse muslimische Reaktionen auf totalitäre Repressionen in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts dar. Basierend auf kasachischen Hagiographien, die von Sufi-Gemeinschaften produziert wurden, untersucht die Monographie, wie diese Gemeinschaften die Erfahrung der Repression interpretierten und erklärten, und wie sich diese Gemeinschaften an das Leben in der Sowjetunion nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg anpassten. Im Mittelpunkt stehen eine Reihe von Mirakelgeschichten, die im Gulag spielen und die Erfahrungen von Heiligen und anderen prominenten Mitgliedern dieser Gemeinschaften mit stalinistischer Unterdrückung erzählen. Diese Hagiographien enthalten politische Kritiken der Stalinzeit, die auf islamischer und sufistischer Ethik basieren. Sie zeigen deutlich die Kontinuität der Sufi-Konzepte in kasachischen Gemeinschaften vom Mittelalter bis zur Unabhängigkeit und stellen in Frage, inwieweit die Sowjetzeit einen Bruch im religiösen Leben muslimischer Gemeinschaften darstellte. The book Gulag Miracles: Sufis and Stalinist Repression in Kazakhstan, represents the first detailed study of Muslim religious responses to totalitarian repression during the first half of the 20th century, and is therefore of interest to specialists in Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, Russian and Soviet History, Central Asian and Turkic Studies, and Sufi Studies. Based on Kazakh-language hagiographies produced by Sufi communities, the monograph examines how these communities interpreted and explained the experience of repression (anti-religious policies targeting Sufis, collectivization, famine, and mass arrests), and how these communities adjusted to Soviet life after the Second World War. At the center of the study are a series of miracle stories, set in the Gulag, recounting the experiences of saints and other prominent members of these communities with Stalinist repression. These stories, rich in symbolic meaning, circulated among these communities in the Soviet era, and contain political critiques of the Stalin era, based on Islamic and Sufi ethics. These hagiographies, published in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, clearly reveal the continuity of Sufi concepts in Kazakh communities from the medieval period, through to independence, bringing into question the degree to which the Soviet era represented a rupture in the religious lives of Muslim communities. The book also considers the role of Sufi communities in Kazakh kinship structures, and their manifestation during the Soviet era. In this context, it reevaluates much that has been written about “Soviet Islam”, questioning the justification for separating the Soviet Union and its Muslim communities from the rest of the “Muslim World”. The hagiographies demonstrate that while Sufi communities underwent a degree of Sovietization, as reflected in their stories, this Sovietization was accomplished, ironically, by a parallel “Islamization” of various aspects of the Soviet experience.

This is an edition of a Chaghatay-language chronicle written in 1841 in Khiva. The text details a military campaign that the Khorezmian ruler Allah-Quli Khan carried in Khorasan (present-day Northern Afghanistan) and that ended with the resettlement of a local group known as the Jamshidis. It has come to us as a single manuscript, which was discovered a few years ago among the holdings of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Written by an eyewitness to the described events, the account contains many facts and details absent from other sources, both Eastern and European. Thus, the text incorporates 37 documents originating from the royal archive in Khiva, which reflect a correspondence between Allah-Quli Khan and various governors in Khorasan. This unique source sheds light on the crafting of historical texts sponsored by a Muslim dynasty on the basis of the material stored in the Khivan chancellery.
