Die vorliegende Untersuchung unternimmt es zum ersten Mal, die im Corpus der altpersischen Königsinschriften bezeugten Redefiguren und sonstigen stilistischen Erscheinungen systematisch zusammenzustellen. Diese Texte heben sich nämlich von einfacher Prosa dadurch ab, daß sie deutliche Spuren einer Stilisierung aufweisen, die ihnen – ähnlich wie die Verwendung bestimmter Wörter und Wortformen – kunstsprachliche Züge verleihen. Die Erscheinungen, die in diesem Zusammenhang zu nennen sind, werden in listenförmiger Darstellung (von „Alliteration“ bis „Zeugma“) in transkribierter Gestalt gemäß der Textausgabe des Verfassers („Die altpersischen Inschriften der Achaimeniden“, 2009) präsentiert, ohne sie nach klanglichen, grammatischen, lexikalischen oder syntaktischen Kriterien zu ordnen. Auf vergleichbare Phänomene in den verwandten Sprachen (insbesondere auch im Avestischen) wird bewußt nur spärlich hingewiesen, um die Aufmerksamkeit nicht vom altpersischen Befund abzulenken. Der Vergleich mit dem Avestischen bzw. im Gesamtbereich des alten Indoiranischen, also in Form einer „Vergleichenden Stilistik des Indoiranischen“, ist erst nach umfassender Sammlung der Zeugnisse in den Einzelsprachen ins Auge zu fassen. Hierzu will die vorliegende Arbeit einen ersten Anstoß geben.

 The present study makes the first attempt to put together, in a systematic manner, the figures of speech and other stylistic phenomena attested in the corpus of the Old Persian royal inscriptions. For those texts are different from simple prose in that they show clear traces of a stylization that similarly to using certain words and word forms lend them characteristic features of an artificial language. The phenomena to be treated in that context are presented in transcription according to the author’s text edition (Die altpersischen Inschriften der Achaimeniden, 2009) in form of a list without classifying them according to phonetic, grammatical, lexical, and syntactic criteria. References to comparable phenomena in the related languages (in particular in Avestan) are consciously given only sporadically in order not to distract the reader’s attention from the Old Persian evidence. The comparison with Avestan or within the ancient Indo-Iranian languages, i. e. in form of “Comparative Stylistics of Indo-Iranian”, has to be aimed at only after a comprehensive collection of the testimonies of the individual languages. The present book intends to give a first impetus to this research.

The book represents the first publication of the complete corpus of Alanic marginal notes in a 13th century Byzantine manuscript from the Library of the Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg. This manuscript is a Greek Old Testament lectionary, or Prophetologion, which at one point was owned and used by an Alanic priest who had learned to read and write Greek, but felt the need to identify the feasts in the margin of his manuscript, because he could not easily find them by skimming the text. For this purpose, he wrote an abbreviated heading of his own in the margin, next to the full heading of the manuscript.

There are altogether 34 marginal notes in the manuscript (24 Alanic, 9 Greek, and 1 mixed). In this edition, every note is followed by the Greek heading, to which the note refers, its translation, and a black-and-white photograph. Then, a short outline of the liturgical context is provided, when necessary, followed by paleographic comments and an analysis of the meaning of the note and its linguistic structure.

The edition of the notes ends with a discussion of the spelling conventions and the language of the notes and with an appendix on the Alanic text in Tzetzes’ Theogonia. 

The book is further provided with full-color photographs of all pages containing marginal notes.

Alanic Marginal Notes in a Greek Liturgical Manuscript

Nach mehreren Einzelbeschreibungen vor allem der Phonologie und Morphologie der Sprachen Mittelpersisch und Parthisch sowie einem Versuch, Aspekte der Syntax beider Sprachen nebeneinanderzustellen, ist die „Grammatik des Westmitteliranischen (Parthisch und Mittelpersisch)“ der erste Versuch, alle Bereiche der zwei Sprachen Mittelpersisch und Parthisch in einer sinnvollen und ausgewogenen Weise gemeinsam zu behandeln. Nach einem Überblick über das vorhandene Material werden die verwendeten Schriften beschrieben. Dann folgen Kapitel zur Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax. Die etwa tausendjährige gemeinsame Geschichte dieser benachbarten und eng verwandten Sprachen macht eine vereinte Behandlung sehr nützlich, denn in den epigraphischen Zeugnissen des 3. Jahrhunderts und im manichäischen Material aus Turfan an der Seidenstraße (Kopien des 9. und 10. Jahrhunderts von Originalen aus dem 3. bis 7. Jahrhundert) sind diese Sprachen zusammen und mit Wechselwirkungen belegt. Diese Quellengruppen bieten eine hervorragende und sehr zuverlässige Grundlage für die Beschreibung. Literarisches, meist zoroastrisches, Mittelpersisch aus dem Sasanidenreich wurde ebenfalls berücksichtigt; nicht aber die „scholastische“ zoroastrische Literatur des 9. Jahrhunderts, die eigene Regeln hat. Die Darstellung ist verständlich, die Sprache der Belege deutlich gekennzeichnet. Im umfangreichen Kapitel zur Syntax werden die Belege in einer klaren Umschrift (Transkription) geboten, die Originalbelege (in Transliteration) sind in einem Verzeichnis aufgeführt und durch einen Stellenindex erschlossen. 

Forscher und Studenten der iranischen Sprach-, Kultur- und Religionsgeschichte, Manichäologen, Zentralasienforscher und Indogermanisten werden dieses Buch konsultieren. Following on a number of individual descriptions of the phonology and morphology of the languages Middle Persian and Parthian and an attempt to place aspects of the syntax of both languages side-by-side, the Grammatik des Westmitteliranischen (Parthisch und Mittelpersisch) [Grammar of Western Middle Iranian (Parthian and Middle Persian)] is the first attempt to describe all areas of the two languages Middle Persian and Parthian together in a meaningful and balanced way. After an overview of the extant material, the scripts used for these languages are described. Chapters on phonology, morphology and syntax follow. The common history of these neighbouring and closely related languages during about a thousand years means that it is very useful to deal with them together, because in the epigraphical testimonies of the 3rd century and in the Manichaean material from Turfan on the Silk Road (9th and 10th-century copies of originals from the 3rd up to the 7th century) these languages are attested together and with interaction. These source groups offer an excellent and very reliable basis for the description. Literary, mostly Zoroastrian, Middle Persian from the Sasanian Empire and era was also consulted; but not the “scholastic” Zoroastrian literature of the 9th century which follows its own rules. The depiction is well-organized, the quotations are clearly marked for language. In the extensive chapter on syntax the quotations are presented in a clear transcription; the originals (in transliteration) are given in a separate listing and are made accessible by an index. Scholars and students of Iranian linguistic, cultural and religious history, Manichaeologists, those interested in Central Asia and Indoeuropeanists will consult this book.
