Wörterbuch der Redensarten zu der von Karl Kraus 1899 bis 1936 herausgegebenen Zeitschrift 'Die Fackel'
No author of the 19th and 20th centuries has thought or written about the language of his contemporaries in Berlin, Prague, Bratislava or Budapest as continuously and as passionately as Karl Kraus, born in Jicin in Bohemia in 1874. No other author has emphasised the names and words peculiar to one area and strange to others or registered the idioms, catchwords and stereotypes in Vienna and Berlin alike as attentively as Karl Kraus. Nowhere else in German literature is there such an extensive documentation of the socio-political idiom of the time as there is to be found in Die Fackel". This is particularly true of multi word units like "da kann man halt nix machen", "machen wir/m.w.", "made in (Germany)", "bis aufs Messer", "mir san mir", "Morgenluft wittern", "aus einer Mücke einen Elefanten machen", to quote just the letter "M.\r Contrary to language dictionaries which primarily present grammatical, morphological and etymological details, this text dictionary is above all interested in showing the significant semantic and pragmatic qualities of words and phrases in specific contexts.
