Syria
(Syria Prōtē, Syria Deutera, Syria Euphratēsia)
Volume 15 in the series TIB, entitled Syria (Syria Prōtē, Syria Deutera, Syria Euphratēsia), is published after more than 13 years of research in written sources in different languages (Greek, Latin, Syrian, Arabic, Armenian, etc.) and archaeological reports, augmented by extensive site visits. Its focus is on the geographical region of northern Syria. During the more than thousand years that are covered, the historical importance of this region was enormous. It saw a rapid succession of rulers, from Roman and Byzantine Emperors to Arab Caliphs, Seljuk Sultans, Crusader Kings and Mamluk leaders. A large introduction of some 400 pages (about the geography, history, church history, economy, trade, routes of communication, etc.) is followed by about 2000 entries, the longest ones being on Antioch and Beroia (Aleppo). The information assembled in this volume gains further value as a complete historical record of archaeological monuments that are endangered by the current political situation.
