Iranische Namen in ägyptischer Nebenüberlieferung

Iranische Namen in ägyptischer Nebenüberlieferung
1. Auflage, 2013
This volume of the “Iranisches Personennamenbuch” (Lexicon of Iranian personal names) presents for the first time a full collection of the personal names attested in Egyptian (Hieroglyphic as well as Demotic) sources, that are of Iranian origin. Those names became known in Egypt mainly during the two periods of Achaemenid rule over this land (between 526 and ca. 400 BCE and in the last years before Alexander’s campaign respectively). They are discussed in detail from the Egyptologist’s and the Iranianist’s point of view. The presentation of the names in principle is the same as in the earlier volumes of the “Iranisches Personennamenbuch”: First comes a full listing of all references, then a sketchy prosopographical characterisation of the person(s) bearing the name, and finally the (partly quite thorough) section on the morphological and etymological interpretation of the name. The progress of Iranian onomastic studies since Ferdinand Justi’s “Iranisches Namenbuch” (1895) is consequently taken into account: The authors made full use of the rich onomastic evidence preserved in the languages of the Achaemenid Empire as well as of the names attested in younger Iranian languages. Full indexes make all the names accessible that are quoted by way of comparison.
