This is the second volume of the series “Fundmünzen aus Usbekistan” [Coin Finds from Uzbekistan], which is jointly edited by the Numismatics research group of the Classics Department at the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Fine Arts of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. The present volume documents eight hoards of Late Kushan and Kushano-Sasanian copper coins from various sources. Of special importance are two finds from regular archaeological excavations in Uzbekistan, viz. from Zartepe and Alibaytepe. Apart from the presentation of the numismatic material, different topics such as rulers, mints, metrology, and additional marks are discussed in detail. Above all, however, this constitutes the first comprehensive attempt since Robert Göbl's studies from 1984 and 1993 to fit the Kushano-Sasanian copper coinage into the history of eastern Iran in Late Antiquity on the basis of numismatic system reconstruction. Also, the still controversial question of the dating of year one of the Kushan King Kanishka I is discussed, which oscillates between the first third of the 2nd century AD and a date 100 years later. While the former is widely accepted nowadays, important numismatic observations contradict it. Apart from coins, other types of sources such as inscriptions or the reports of ancient historians are also used. The discussion is supported by plentiful illustrations inserted into the text. A systematic overview illustrates the basic structure of Kushano-Sasanian copper coin production. Selected coins from these eight hoards are presented on 30 plates, with particularly well-preserved specimens also shown in enlargements.
