Eiszeit ‒ Ice Age
Neue Ergebnisse zum Paläolithikum in Österreich. New Results on the Palaeolithic in Austria
1. Auflage, 2025
The book accompanying the ‘Ice Age’ exhibition tells the story of the fascinating world of the Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers of the last Ice Age between around 40,000 and 11,700 years ago. This time frame is intrinsically connected to modern humans (Homo sapiens). Numerous finds discovered in Lower Austria provide evidence of the world at that time: the remains of mammoths, world-famous finds such as the Venus of Willendorf, or the oldest ceramic figurines of antelopes and other Ice Age animals, as well as the double infant burial at Krems-Wachtberg date to this period. Based on these internationally recognised finds and findings, the book shows different areas of daily life, from birth to death, and complex survival strategies of the highly mobile societies. The life of the Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers in the Danube area raises several important questions for researchers: How did humans manage to survive sometimes very extreme conditions? What did their campsites look like and how long did they stay there? How did they cook and preserve the surplus meat? Which colour pigments were used? How did they dress and adorn themselves? Which animals were hunted, and which weapons were used? How close were birth and death, and what rituals surrounded death? These are only a few of the questions to which the answers can be found in this book, based on the intensive archaeological research carried out by the team of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW).
