The monograph deals with the multi-period settlement of Zwingendorf, Lower Austria. The results of the archaeological analysis of the finds of the two-years excavation provide a basis for the chronology of the site. Further analyses have attempted to investigate the extent to which a combination of conventional excavation, various modern archaeological prospecting techniques and soil sampling would be able to inform us about the history of the settlement and its environmental setting. Aerial archaeology and geophysical prospection have revealed a large number of settlement objects, thereby providing a context for the parts of the site already excavated.
On the basis of the quantified data of the extensive field survey in a GIS environment, it has been possible to visualize the extents of various settlement phases and their concentrations. Soil samplings revealed the extent and layout of the settlement, and showed the economic possibilities of the site's environment. The integration of all the data has provided deep insights into the archaeological site allowing conclusions to be drawn on the environmental context of the settlement during various archaeological periods.
