Die handschriftliche Überlieferung der Werke des Heiligen Augustinus, Band XI

The 11th volume of the series “Die handschriftliche Überlieferung der Werke des Heiligen Augustinus”, edited by the Church Fathers Commission at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, lists all medieval manuscripts kept nowadays in Russia, Slovenia, and Hungary which contain genuine works of Augustine or spurious ones ascribed to him. The material is presented in two catalogues, one ordered by works, one by libraries. Part 1 (Werkverzeichnis) gives all works, letters, and sermons as well as florilegia, verses, prayers, and excerpts. In addition, texts that are attributed to Augustine in the manuscript have been included as well as translations of (pseudo-)Augustinian works into modern languages. Two indices (one of authors, the other listed by initials) give quick access to the information required. Part 2 (Bibliotheksverzeichnis) contains all the manuscripts (about 300) ordered by location and shelf mark. Furthermore, it provides descriptions of codices that got lost in the 20th century. Most prominent of all manuscripts listed in the catalogue is the famous St. Petersburg-codex which was presumably written during Augustine’s lifetime. All in all, most manuscripts date from the late Middle Ages and contain a great number of medieval spuria. They were identified, as far as possible; thus, access to this important field of research is provided not only to editors of Augustine, but also to a wider range of scholars such as medievists, historians and theologians.
