Als 11. Band der von der Kirchenväterkommission der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften edierten Reihe „Die hand schriftliche Überlieferung der Werke des Heiligen Augustinus“ liegt nun der Katalog der Bibliotheken Russlands, Sloweniens und Ungarns vor. Aufgenommen wurden alle mittelalterlichen Handschriften, die echte Werke des Augustinus oder unechte, die fälschlich unter seinem Namen überliefert sind, enthalten. Die Bestände werden in zwei Verzeichnissen präsentiert: Das Werkverzeichnis umfasst neben den Werken, Briefen und Predigten auch zahlreiche Florilegien, Verse, Gebete und Exzerpte sowie Texte anderer Autoren, die dem Bischof von Hippo zugeschrieben wurden; einbezogen wurden außerdem volkssprachliche Übersetzungen (pseudo-)augustinischer Werke. Ein rasches Auffinden der gewünschten Information wird durch ein Autoren- und Initienverzeichnis gewähr leistet. Das Bibliotheksverzeichnis stellt unter Berück sichtigung von (Kriegs-) Verlusten alle Handschriften (etwa 300) nach Standorten und Signaturen geordnet zusammen. Aus den Handschriften ragt der berühmte Sankt Petersburger Augustinuscodex hervor, der vermutlich noch zu Lebzeiten Augustins geschrieben wurde. Der größte Teil der aufgenommenen Handschriften datiert aus dem Spätmittelalter und enthält überwiegend hoch- und spätmittelalterliche Spuria. Diese wurden, soweit dies möglich war, identifiziert, sodass nicht nur Augustinus-Editoren, sondern auch ein breiterer Benützerkreis – vor allem Mediävisten, Historiker und Theologen – leichteren Zugang zur Augustinus-Rezeption finden.

The 11th volume of the series “Die handschriftliche Überlieferung der Werke des Heiligen Augustinus”, edited by the Church Fathers Commission at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, lists all medieval manuscripts kept nowadays in Russia, Slovenia, and Hungary which contain genuine works of Augustine or spurious ones ascribed to him. The material is presented in two catalogues, one ordered by works, one by libraries. Part 1 (Werkverzeichnis) gives all works, letters, and sermons as well as florilegia, verses, prayers, and excerpts. In addition, texts that are attributed to Augustine in the manuscript have been included as well as translations of (pseudo-)Augustinian works into modern languages. Two indices (one of authors, the other listed by initials) give quick access to the information required. Part 2 (Bibliotheksverzeichnis) contains all the manuscripts (about 300) ordered by location and shelf mark. Furthermore, it provides descriptions of codices that got lost in the 20th century. Most prominent of all manuscripts listed in the catalogue is the famous St. Petersburg-codex which was presumably written during Augustine’s lifetime. All in all, most manuscripts date from the late Middle Ages and contain a great number of medieval spuria. They were identified, as far as possible; thus, access to this important field of research is provided not only to editors of Augustine, but also to a wider range of scholars such as medievists, historians and theologians.
