Seventy-nine species of Tardigrada, including 14 new reports, have been recorded within Austria. Of the 133 taxa previously reported by various authors, 41 species represent nomina dubia, nine are synonyms that have been previously recognized, eight species still need to be revised further or their reported occurrence within the country needs to be confirmed, three species have been misidentified. The majority of data on tardigrades from Austria has been provided by F. MIHELCIC between 1949 and 1972, but these data are largely confusing, and hence, of limited utility. Most of the species (63) have been reported from the province of Tyrol. The tardigrades of Austria are still poorly known, and a modern revision is urgently needed.
