Jonathan A. Silk

is Professor of Buddhist Studies at Leiden University, Netherlands

Jonathan Silk is Professor of Buddhist Studies at Leiden University and Visiting Professor at LMU (from January 2025). His research focuses on the scriptural literature of Indian Buddhism, with particular attention to the Mahāyāna sūtras and their translations into Chinese and Tibetan. His monographs include “Buddhist Cosmic Unity” (2015), “Riven by Lust: Incest and Schism in Indian Buddhist Legend and Historiography” (2008), and “Managing Monks: Administrators and Administrative Roles in Indian Buddhist Monasticism” (2008) and numerous articles. He is, among other things, founding editor-in-chief of Brill's “Encyclopedia of Buddhism” and co-editor-in-chief of the “Indo-Iranian Journal”.
