Das Opernschaffen von Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) und besonders die zweite seiner Opern, Prodaná nevesta (Die verkaufte Braut), haben nicht nur in der Entwicklung der tschechischen Musiktradition, sondern auch in der nationalen Entwicklung des Landes eine besondere Rolle gespielt. Prodaná nevesta ist zum Maßstab für alle nachfolgenden tschechischen Opern geworden und ihre Stilisierung zu einem Manifest der Nation hat schon zu Lebzeiten Smetanas eingesetzt. In diesem Kontext haben sich die Autoren der vorliegenden Publikation die Frage nach der übernationalen Wirkung und Rezeption der Oper gestellt: Was hat Die verkaufte Braut für Wien und darüber hinaus für die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie bedeutet? Denn es war die Haupt- und Residenzstadt Wien, in der diese Oper 1892 (noch in tschechischer Sprache) das erste Mal im deutschsprachigen Raum aufgeführt worden ist, es war wieder Wien, wo sie 1893 das erste Mal auf Deutsch gespielt wurde, und es war die Wiener Hofoper, von der aus sie 1896 ihren Weg auf alle Bühnen der Welt gefunden hat. - Die verkaufte Braut wurde als Manifest der tschechischen Nation in einer Zeit der nationalen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Wien und Prag verstanden, andererseits aber als Chance einer übernationalen Verständigung rezipiert. Das spiegelt sich in den Akten der Wiener Hofoper ebenso wider wie in den Aufführungskritiken der Wiener Tages- und Fachpresse, die hier erstmals vorgelegt werden. Ein ausführlicher Anmerkungs- und Kommentarteil sowie detailgenaue Biographien der handelnden Personen unterstreichen die problemorientierte Vorgangsweise der Autoren. Nicht zuletzt werden die Ergebnisse der tschechischsprachigen Forschung zum musik- und theatergeschichtlichen Umfeld der Verkauften Braut erstmals außerhalb ihres Entstehungslandes bekannt gemacht. The operatic works of the czech composer Bedřich Smetana (18241884), in particular his second opera Prodaná nevĕsta (The Bartered Bride) are of great importance not only for the Czech musical tradition, but also for the Czech national consciousness. Prodaná nevĕsta has served as a model for all subsequent Czech operas and its stylization as a nation´s manifesto has already started during



the composer´s lifetime. With this in mind, the authors of this publication have tried to examine its transnational effects and reception: What did The Bartered Bride mean to Vienna, and, beyond, to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in general? In brief, this opera was performed in Vienna (still in Czech) for the first time in the German-speaking area in 1892; one year later the first performance in German was staged in the same city. And finally the staging in 1896 by the Vienna Court Opera House was the beginning of the The Bartered Bride´s world wide success. Nevertheless The Bartered Bride was well understood as a national opera in an age of nationalist struggles between Vienna and Prague, but at the same time it was acknowledged as an opportunity for transnational understanding. This becomes evident through the files of the Vienna Court Opera, as well the reviews in the daily papers and musical journals, both presented here for the first time. Furthermore the results of the musical and theatrical research of the Czech scientific community are presented for the first time outside its country of origin. A detailed apparatus and precise biographies of the leading persons conclude the book.
