Die Entstehung und Verbreitung des Tantrismus in Südasien ab Mitte des ersten Jahrtausends n. Chr. hat viele religiöse Traditionen der Region geprägt: die śivaitischen Traditionen, das viṣṇuitische Pāñcarātra, den Mantrayāna-Buddhismus und den Jainismus. Trotz dieser fundamentalen Bedeutung des Tantrismus für die religiöse Entwicklung Südasiens wissen wir bisher nur wenig darüber, wie frühe tantrische Gemeinschaften organisiert waren und welche Stellung sie in der Gesellschaft innehatten. Dieser Sammelband bietet neue Einblicke in die sozio-religiöse Geschichte tantrischer Traditionen. From the middle of the first millennium CE, South Asia saw the emergence and rise of Tantrism within all of its major religious traditions: Śaivism, the Vaiṣṇava Pāñcarātra, the Buddhist Mantrayāna, and Jainism. Despite the fact that Tantrism grew to become such an integral part of the religious landscape, our understanding of how early Tantric communities were actually organized and how they positioned themselves in society is still limited. This collection of articles by leading scholars offers new insights into the socio-religious history of premodern Tantric traditions.

Das Buch setzt als dritter von fünf geplanten Bänden das Wörterbuch zur Terminologie hinduistischer Tantren mit den Begriffen von ta bis pha fort. Wie die ersten beiden Bände bietet er Übersetzungen der Sanskrit-Begriffe in Französisch, Englisch und Deutsch, Erklärungen zu der Bedeutung und Verwendung der Begriffe in einer oder mehreren der drei genannten Sprachen und Stellenbelege aus śivaitischen und visnuitischen Texten. Der Band folgt im Wesentlichen den Prinzipien der beiden ersten Bände. Dank der heutigen leichteren Verfügbarkeit von digital erfassten Manuskripten und elektronischen Texten konnten allerdings noch mehr Quellentexte berücksichtigt werden, was es möglich macht, auch den historischen Wandel mancher komplexer Begriffe nachzuzeichnen. Wie auch in den ersten Bänden sind die Einträge von einem international renommierten Expertenteam verfasst. Mit jedem neuen Band steigt der Wert des Wörterbuches, da immer mehr Querverweisen gefolgt werden kann. Ein wichtiges Nachschlagewerk für alle an den tantrischen Hindu-Traditionen Interessierten. This third volume (out a projected five) of definitions of tantric terms covers the letters ta through pha. As before, the Sanskrit terms are first translated into French, English and German, and paragraphs of explanation then follow in one or more of those languages about the meaning and usage of the terms with quotations from Śaiva and Vaiṣṇava literature. The conventions of the earlier volumes have been observed, but the bibliography of published and unpublished sources that are drawn upon has been further expanded – thanks in part to easier access to manuscript sources because of digital imagery and a growing shared corpus of machine-searchable electronic texts – and the volume is thus a little thicker than its predecessors. The expansion of source material has also meant that we have been able, in several articles devoted to complex and evolving concepts, to map out patterns of change and so give some sense of historical depth in this portrait of the Mantramārga. The entries have again been composed and discussed by a team of internationally renowned scholars. As more of the dictionary is realised, more cross-references can be followed up, and its value as a companion to the study of Vaiṣṇava and Śaiva tantric literature increases.

Das Pāñcarātra ist eine der bedeutendsten Hindu-Traditionen, die Viṣṇu als höchsten Gott verehren. Seine Geschichte erstreckt sich von vermutlich noch vorchristlicher Zeit bis in die Gegenwart, wo es in Aspekten der Religion der Śrīvai̋ṇavas lebendig ist. Das vorliegende Buch beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung und Geschichte dieser Tradition im 12./13. Jahrhundert n. Chr. auf Basis der Pārameśvarasaṃhitā, eines Textes, der zu dieser Zeit im Umfeld des Raṅganāthasvāmin-Tempels in Śrīraṅgam (Südindien) entstanden ist. Es beleuchtet unter anderem die Sozialstruktur des Pāñcarātra zur Entstehungszeit der Pārameśvarasaṃhitā, die Vorstellungen von Offenbarung und Überlieferung sowie deren Darstellung als Geschichte der Tradition, die wesentlichen Veränderungen im Ritual, zu denen es in der Zeit vor der Pārameśvarasaṃhitā aus sozialen und politischen Gründen gekommen ist und die der Hauptgrund für das Verfassen eben dieser gewesen sind, sowie die theologischen Grundlehren in dieser Entwicklungsphase des Pāñcarātra.  The Pāñcarātra is one of the most important Hindu traditions that worship Viṣṇu as the Supreme God. Its beginnings were probably before the Christian era and it is still extant today in certain aspects of the Śrīvai̋ṇavas' religion. This volume deals with the development and history of this tradition in the 12th/13th centuries A.D. on the basis of the Pārameśvarasaṃhitā, a text written at this period in the Raṅganāthasvāmin Temple in Śrīraṅgam (South India). Insights into the social structure of the Pāñcarātra at the time of the Pārameśvarasaṃhitā's composition, the concepts of revelation and transmission, their depiction as the tradition's source, and the basic theological doctrines of the Pāñcarātra of this period. Also discussed are the fundamental ritual changes that occurred for social and political reasons during this period, these being the main reason for the text's composition.

Der Sammelband schließt sich mit Arbeiten zu den religiösen Traditionen des Pancaratra und des Visistadvaitavedanta thematisch an die ersten beiden Bände Studies in Hinduism" I und II, die sich dem Verhältnis zwischen den vedischen und den hinduistischen Religionen bzw. dem Phänomen des Tantra widmen.\nDie ersten drei Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes befassen sich mit der textlichen Überlieferung des Pancaratra. M. RASTELLI zeigt anhand des Beispieles des für die Verehrung Gottes verwendeten Thrones (asana) die Art und Weise, auf welche der Text der Paramesvarasamhita aus früheren Pancaratra-Werken kompiliert wurde. M. CZERNIAK-DROZDZOWICZ beschreibt die achtteilige religiöse Praxis eines Pancaratra-Anhängers, die ein strukturelles Element des Textes der Paramasamhita bildet. In thematischer Nähe dazu steht die Arbeit von G. OBERHAMMER, die sich mit der Struktur und dem Inhalt des 24. Kapitels der Paramasamhita befasst, welches die vidvatpuja, "die von einem Weisen [vorgenommene] Verehrung, beschreibt.\nDie anderen drei Artikel sind der Tradition des Visistadvaitavedanta gewidmet, die in ihrer historischen Entwicklung eng mit der des Pancaratra verbunden ist. Following the first two volumes of “Studies in Hinduism” that discuss the relationship between the Vedic and the Hindu religions and the phenomenon of Tantra, this third volume deals with the religious traditions of Pāñcarātra and Viśiṣṭādvaitavedānta. The first three contributions examine the transmission of the texts of Pāñcarātra. M. RASTELLI illustrates how the text of the Pārameśvarasaṃhitā was compiled from earlier Pāñcarātra works by means of the conception of the throne(āsana) that is used for the worship of God. M. CZERNIAK-DROŻDŻOWICZ describes the eight-fold religious practice of a Pāñcarātric devotee, which constitutes a structural element of the text of the Paramasaṃhitā.



Thematically related, G. OBERHAMMER’s contribution on Pāñcarātra deals with the structure and the content of the twenty-fourth chapter of the Paramasaṃhitā, which describes the vidvatpūjā, the “worship [performed] by a wise one”.

The volume’s other three papers are devoted to the tradition of Viśiṣṭādvaitavedānta, which is historically closely related to the Pāñcarātra. G. OBERHAMMER discusses Meghanādārisūri’s concept of the goddess and its position in the history of ideas of the Rāmānuja school. H. MARLEWICZ deals with the Viśiṣṭādvaitavedānta polemics against the advaitic akhaṇḍavākyārtha theory. M. SCHMÜCKER describes the Rāmānuja school’s criticism of the advaitic teaching on the perceptibility of the being as such (sanmātra).







Pancaratra and Visistadvaitvedanta

Durch die Darstellung der grundlegenden Lehren der Jayakhyasamhita wird ein Einblick in die bis heute in Indien lebende Tradition des Pancaratra gewährt. Die Jayakhyasamhita ist einer der ältesten und autoritativsten der uns heute erhaltenen Texte dieser Tradition. Sie widmet sich hauptsächlich dem Ritual, das täglich oder zu bestimmten Anlässen durchgeführt wird, legt jedoch in diesem Zusammenhang auch Lehren von der Weltentstehung, Gott, dem Mantra, der individuellen Seele und den religiösen Zielen des Menschen dar. Diese Lehren werden in der vorliegenden Studie systematisch dargestellt und ihre Umsetzung in die Praxis anhand einer ausführlichen Beschreibung des täglichen Rituals und der Yoga-Übung veranschaulicht. Ergänzt wird die Arbeit durch Übersetzungen von in Hinblick auf kosmologische, theologische und philosophische Lehren aussagekräftige Textpassagen.  The description of the basic teachings of the Jayakhyasamhita gives an insight into the tradition of Pancaratra which is still living. The Jayakhyasamhita is one of the oldest and most authoritative texts of this tradition which has been preserved. It deals mainly with the daily or occasional ritual, but expounds in this context teachings of the creation of the world, God, the mantra, the individual soul and the religious aims of human beings, too. In the present study these teachings are described systematically and its translation into practice is set forth by a detailed description of passages which are expressive with respect to cosmological, theological and philosophical teachings.
