Die späte Bronzezeit im östlichen Mittelmeerraum gehört zu den spannendsten Kapiteln der antiken Weltgeschichte: Eine Vielfalt an archäologischen Zeugnissen und in Keilschrift geschriebenen Dokumenten veranschaulicht zahlreiche Kontakte zwischen verschiedenen politischen Einheiten im 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr. Reziproker Gabentausch im diplomatischen Kontakt und redistributive Mobilität von Gütern in asymmetrischen politischen Verhältnissen prägten die regionale und überregionale Kommunikation in unterschiedlicher Weise. Anschließend an die in der letzten Zeit intensiv geführten Diskussionen um Formen von Kulturkontakten und Kulturtransfer, diskutieren die vorliegenden Beiträge Fragen nach den konkreten Mechanismen und Wegen des Austauschs von materiellen Gütern und Knowhow zwischen den Groß- und Kleinstaaten der Ägäis, Anatoliens, Syriens, der Levante und Ägyptens.

Woher kamen welche Rohstoffe und welche Fertigprodukte, und unter welchen Bedingungen wurden sie von wem und durch wen verhandelt? Lassen sich Regionen der Herstellung und direkte als auch indirekte Wege der Verteilung ermitteln? Welche Regeln existierten im überregionalen Austausch? Welche Möglichkeiten und Pflichten kamen den Kleinstaaten der Levante zwischen den Großmächten der Hethiter, Assyrer und Ägypter zu, und welche Rolle spielten die mykenischen Paläste der Ägäis im internationalen Geflecht des Güteraustauschs?

Im Rahmen des internationalen Symposions in Freiburg haben Archäologen, Philologen und Historiker diese Themen konkret anhand der aktuellen Auswertung archäologischer und schriftlicher Zeugnisse auf interdisziplinärer Ebene diskutiert und gemeinsam Perspektiven auf die konkreten Formen des Austauschs im Zusammenspiel der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Kräfte entwickelt. The Late Bronze Age in the Eastern Mediterranean belongs to the most captivating chapters in the history of the Ancient World: Various cuneiform documents and archaeological sources illustrate the numerous contacts between different polities in the 2nd millennium BCE. Reciprocal gift exchange within the framework of diplomatic contacts and redistributive mobility of goods in asymmetric political relations shaped regional and supra-regional communication in different ways. Following the detailed discussions about modes of culture contacts and exchanges in previous research the contributions in the present volume address questions of the specific mechanisms and routes of exchange. How and by which means did material commodities and knowledge circulate among the Great Powers, lesser independent states and vassal kingdoms of the Aegean, Anatolia, Syria, the Levant, Mesopotamia and Egypt? Where did the different raw materials and finished products come from, and under which conditions and by whom were they negotiated? Is it possible to determine regions of production and direct and indirect channels of distribution? Which rules were applied in the supra-regional exchange? Which possibilities and which obligations did the vassal kingdoms of the Levant have towards the Great Powers of the Hittites, Assyrians and Egyptians? Which role did the Mycenaean palaces of the Aegean play within the “international” network of exchanges? Can we develop a model of political and economic interaction? During the symposium at Freiburg University archaeologists, philologists and historians discussed these issues on the basis of the current evaluation of the archaeological and written evidence within an interdisciplinary framework and developed perspectives on the specific forms of exchange (re)considering the interaction of political and economic forces.

Mit dem Ende der ersten Dynastie von Babylon gegen die Mitte des 2. Jts. v. Chr. beginnt das so genannte "Dunkle Zeitalter". Es ist durch eine Lücke in der gesamten Dokumentation von Mesopotamien bedingt und macht es uns unmöglich absolut chronologische Daten für die die erste Hälfte des 2. Jts. und die Zeit davor zu liefern: alle Daten vor ca. 1430/20 v. Chr. sind relativ. Zahlreiche Versuche die erste Dynastie von Babylon absolut zu datieren wurden anhand der Auswertung der auf der "Venus Tafel" vermerkten astronomischen Beobachtungen aus der Zeit des altbabylonischen Herrschers Ammisaduqa unternommen, die zu einer langen, mittleren bzw. kurzen Chronologie führten. Vorliegende Einleitung zur Chronologie Mesopotamiens im 2. Jt. behandelt die Themenbereiche astronomische Daten, Kalender, keilschriftliche Quellen mit chronologischen Informationen und naturwissenschaftliche Methoden. Diese bilden mit Einbindung früherer Forschungsergebnisse und zahlreicher Querverweise die Basis für die Chronologie-Diskussion. Mit der alphabetischen Reihenfolge der Themenbereiche will die Einleitung gezielt einer thematischen Gewichtung entgegenwirken; der chronologische Wert der einzelnen Bereiche wird zusammenfassend am Ende der Kapitel erläutert. Kapitel 1 enthält einen Überblick über die Probleme der mesopotamischen Chronologie des 2. Jts. Mit der ausgiebigen und kritischen Diskussion chronologischer Studien enthält sich diese Einleitung bewusst einer Positionierung für éine bestimmte Chronologie, die darauf abzielt den aktuellen Stand der Forschung umfassend und verständlich zu präsentieren und weiterführende Forschung zu stimulieren Around the middle of the 2nd millennium B.C., after the end of the first Babylonian dynasty, there is a chronological gap in all of our information from Mesopotamia, the Dark Age, which makes it impossible to establish the absolute chronology of the earlier half of the millennium and before. Only relative dates can be provided prior to c.1430/1420 B.C. The central problem of Mesopotamian chronology is the dating of the first Babylonian dynasty. Attempts have been made to compute an absolute date for this dynasty by means of the “Venus Tablet” written, it would seem, during the reign of the Old Babylonian King Ammisaduqa. But the data in the table is difficult to interpret and has resulted in three chronologies, the high, the middle and the low. This “introduction” to the chronology of 2nd millennium Mesopotamia includes the topics which form the basis for chronological discussions, such as the dating methods and calendars of Mesopotamia, relevant sources for Mesopotamian chronology and natural science information. Each chronological topic is discussed in a separate chapter. The topics, ­ hence chapters, ­ are arranged alphabetically, not in order of importance: the chronological importance of each topic is considered in a summary at the end of each chapter. Chapter 1 starts with an overview of the problems of 2nd millennium Mesopotamian chronology. Throughout the book previous research in the individual topics is reviewed at some length with constant reference to the relevant publications and related topics. This book is not an argument for any of the currently proposed chronologies, but an extensive and critical review of existing studies. It is hoped that it will offer insights into the current state of chronological research in Ancient Near Eastern studies and will stimulate further research.

Der Spezialforschungsbereich „Synchronisation of the Civilisations in the Eastern Mediterranean in the 2nd Millennium B.C.“ führt ein eigenes Subprojekt zur Chronologie Mesopotamiens durch. Im Rahmen des Subprojekts wurden mehrere Wissenschaftler, die auf diesem Gebiet Forschungen betrieben haben, zu einem Workshop am 8. und 9. November 2002 nach Wien eingeladen, um ihre Ansichten zu diskutieren und im Gespräch zu klären. Dabei sollte das Augenmerk nicht so sehr auf das eigentliche Mesopotamien, sondern vor allem auf seine westlichen und nördlichen Nachbarn gerichtet werden. Im vorliegenden Band werden die Beiträge zu dieser Konferenz in stark überarbeiteter Form vorgelegt. Folgende Regionen sind behandelt worden: das Reich Mittani, das Gebiet am mittleren Euphrat, die Städte Emar und Alalach, die Hethiter, und schließlich Babylonien. Der Band gibt damit einen Überblick über den derzeitigen Stand der Chronologie des 2. Jahrtausends v. Chr. für die Länder östlich des Mittelmeers.
