Für die moderne Erforschung der slowenischen Höhlen wurde 1996 eine mehrjährige Kooperation zwischen der Universität Ljubljana, der Universität Wien und der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften initiiert. Idee dieser Zusammenarbeit war es, die Resultate von Altgrabungen mit modernen Methoden zu ergänzen. Vor allem wurde daran gedacht, die Altersstellung der Fossilfunde und Artefakte mit radiometrischen Methoden zu eruieren sowie die fossilen Faunenreste nach dem neuesten Stand der paläobiologischen Forschung zu bearbeiten. Nach dem Vorbild der so erfolgreichen Nachgrabungen in der Potocka zijalka und der Ajdovska jama wurde nun in der Križna jama (Kreuzberghöhle) ähnlich vorgegangen. Sie gehört zu den interessantesten Höhlen des klassischen Karstgebietes. Es gibt hier nicht nur prachtvolle Tropfsteingebilde zu bewundern; einzigartig ist der unterirdische Wasserlauf, der auf einer Länge von acht Kilometern mit Schlauchbooten befahren werden kann. Weniger bekannt ist die Križna jama als Fundstelle des Höhlenbären, obwohl hier paläontologische Grabungen schon vor 125 Jahren durch ein Grabungsteam des Naturhistorischen Museums Wien stattgefunden haben. Bei den Nachgrabungen in den Jahren 2000 und 2001 wurden überaus reiche Fundschichten angetroffen, die so viele gut erhaltene Reste von Höhlenbären enthielten, dass folgende wissenschaftliche Probleme geklärt werden konnten: die systematische Zugehörigkeit der Höhlenbären, die Zeitspanne, in der sie in der Križna jama überwintert haben, sowie die Besonderheiten ihrer Lebensweise im Vergleich zu den anderen Höhlenbären.



Ergänzende Artikel über die Grabungsgeschichte, die Geologie der Höhlenumgebung, den überaus interessanten Verlauf der unterirdischen Gewässer, die Tropfsteine und Sedimente sowie über die heute in der Höhle lebenden Tiere runden die Monographie ab. In order to establish modern research on caves faunas from Slovenia, a co-operation for several years between the University of Vienna, the University of Ljubljana and the Austrian Academy of Sciences was established in 1996. The idea behind was to complete the results of former excavations with new methodological approaches. The focus lay especially on determining the chronological age of fossil finds and artefacts by radiocarbon dating and on studying the fauna remains in the light of the newest palaeobiological research standards. In Križna jama (Kreuzberghöhle) we followed the example set by the successful additional excavations in Potočka zijalka and Ajdovska jama. It is one of the most interesting caves in the classical karst area. Not only is it possible to admire magnificent sinter structures but also to follow eight kilometres along a unique subterranean stream in an inflatable dinghy. Križna jama is less well known as cave bear site even though an excavation team from the Natural History Museum in Vienna carried out palaeontological excavations already 125 years ago. Additional excavations in 2000 and 2001 recovered rich fossil layers with many well preserved cave bears remains that allowed for clarifying the following scientific problems: the systematic position of the cave bear remains, the time period in which the site has been used for hibernation, as well as certain peculiarities in their behaviour compared to other cave bear faunas. Additional articles concerning the history of excavation, the geology of the surrounding, the extremely interesting course of the subterranean regimes, the speleothems and sediments as well as regarding the modern cave fauna and troglobites complete the monograph.

Die Ajdovska jama (Haidenhöhle) bei Krsko in Slowenien ist eine kleine Durchgangshöhle, die in mehrfacher Hinsicht großes wissenschaftliches Interesse erweckte. Mehrere archäologische Grabungen ließen erkennen, dass die Höhle sowohl jungpleistozäne als auch frühholozäne Sedimente mit steinzeitlichen Funden und Faunenresten enthält. Bei der ersten Grabung im Jahre 1938 wurde ein umfangreiches Fundgut geborgen, das dem Museum in Celje übergeben wurde, aber im 2. Weltkrieg zerstört worden ist. Eine weitere Grabung im Jahre 1967 ließ erkennen, dass die Ajdovska jama auch eine überregional bedeutsame Nekropole des Neolithikums war. Die folgenden Grabungskampagnen waren hauptsächlich den neolithischen Fundschichten gewidmet und brachten sensationelle Ergebnisse. Bei diesen Grabungen wurden aber auch noch ungestörte Schichten angetroffen, die Höhlenbärenreste enthielten und daher dem Pleistozän zuzurechnen sind. Die Schichtfolge zu klären sowie frische Proben für Altersbestimmungen und genetische Analysen zu gewinnen, waren die Hauptziele einer Grabungskampagne im Jahre 2001 in Kooperation der Universitäten Ljubljana und Wien bzw. der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Die vorliegende Monographie ist vor allem den pleistozänen Faunelementen, besonders dem Höhlenbären gewidmet, der einer Höhlenbärenart angehörte, die bisher nur aus dem Hochgebirge bekannt war. Über die neolithischen Funde wird eine Zusammenfassung der Forschungsergebnisse beigefügt, die schon andernorts publiziert worden sind. Ajdovska jama ist aber auch von großer zoologischer Bedeutung. Sie ist Heimstätte einer großen Kolonie einer gefährdeten Fledermausart. Ein Artikel über das Leben der Mittelmeerhufeisennase in dieser Höhle bildet den Abschluss dieser Monographie. Ajdovska jama near Krsko in Slovenia is a small passage cave that arouses great scientific interest for several reasons. A number of archaeological excavations have shown that the cave contains both Upper Pleistocene and early Holocene sediments, as well as Palaeolithic finds and faunal remains. During the first excavations carried out by Srecko Brodar in 1938, significant Upper Pleistocene finds were made. These were given to the museum in Celje, but were destroyed during World War II. An excavation in 1967 showed that Ajdovska jama was also a Neolithic necropolis of great importance. Later excavations mainly focused on Neolithic layers at the back of the cave. This led to sensational results. Undisturbed layers containing cave bear bones were also found, thus dating these layers to the Pleistocene. A short excavation was undertaken in 2001 by the University of Ljubljana in cooperation with the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Its main objectives were to clarify stratigraphy and obtain samples for radiocarbon dating and genetic analyses. The present monograph primarily examines the Pleistocene faunal finds, especially the cave bear findings. They are attributed to a cave species that until now is known only in the high Alps. A previously published summary of the scientific results of the Neolithic finds is also included. Ajdovska jama is also of great zoological importance. It is the home of a large colony of Mediterranean horseshoe bats, which is an endangered species. Hence, the monograph concludes with an article about the life of these bats in the cave.

Ajdovska jama

Potocka Zijalka is an important Alpine cave site containing rich archaeological and palaeontological remains that were uncovered from 1928 to 1935. The Second World War destroyed most of the palaeontological material. Thus, the first monograph on Potocka Zijalka published by Srecko and Mitja Brodar in 1983 focused mainly on the archaeological remains. The aim of the recent excavation campaigns from 1997 to 2000 was to fill the gap in the faunal record of Potocka Zijalka. In addition, radiometric dating of samples was undertaken, and pollen and sediment analysis as well as mtDNA analysis was done. This monograph discusses the geology, sedimentology, chronology, climatology, palynology and taphonomy of the site. The studies presented in the monograph offer several new implications concerning the use of caves by man and animals during the Palaeolithic period, and contribute the understanding of site formation processes in Alpine caves.
