Der Forschungsschwerpunkt zum Register des Patriarchats von Konstantinopel an der Byzanzforschung der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften widmet sich mit dem vorliegenden Band neuen Ergebnissen zur Geschichte des Ökumenischen Patriarchats. Chronologischer Schwerpunkt dieser Forschungsergebnisse ist die byzantinische Zeit ab dem 11. Jahrhundert. Die Beiträge gehen auf ein internationales Symposium in Wien zurück. 

Die Mehrzahl der hier versammelten Untersuchungen gruppiert sich um eine der maßgeblichen Quellen, das Patriarchatsregister von Konstantinopel, mit mehr als 800 Dokumenten, die zwischen 1315 und 1402 von oder für das Patriarchat und die „ständige Synode“ von Konstantinopel verfasst wurden (heute Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Cod. hist. gr. 47 und 48). Die Anzahl sonstiger Zeugnisse (Urkunden, Synodenakten, Konzilsakten, Erwähnung in der Historiographie) ist beschränkt, wird aber im Rahmen dieses Bandes etwa durch zwei neue Texteditionen bereichert.

Im Mittelpunkt stehen Fragen der Organisation und Verwaltung des Ökumenischen Patriarchats sowie neue biographische Details zu einzelnen Patriarchen. Einige Beiträge widmen sich dabei auch der Kontinuität des Ökumenischen Patriarchats und seinen neuen Aufgaben in der frühen postbyzantinischen Periode. This volume about the history of the Ecumenical Patriarchate results from a congress, held in Vienna within the framework of research on the Register of the Patriarchate of Constantinople at the Division of Byzantine Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Chronologically, these papers cover the (Byzantine) period from the 11th century onwards. The majority of the collected studies concern a crucial source: the Register of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. This includes more than 800 documents written between 1315 and 1402 by or for the Patriarchate and the “permanent Synod” of Constantinople, and is now held in the Austrian National Library, Cod. hist. gr. 47 and 48. Besides the Register, the evidence for the Patriarchate is confined to a small number of documents, synodical acts, and occasional references in narrative histories. However, the present volume brings two new texts to light. The focus of this volume is on the organization and administration of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, as well as on new biographical details of individual patriarchs. It also includes contributions devoted to the continuity of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and its new tasks in the early post-Byzantine period.

Das in zwei griechischen Handschriften der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek erhaltene „Register des Patriarchats von Konstantinopel“ enthält mehr als 800 Dokumente, die zwischen 1315 und 1402 vom oder für das Patriarchat und die Synode der Bischöfe von Konstantinopel verfasst wurden, und stellt eine der wichtigsten Quellen für die kirchliche, politische und soziale Geschichte des Byzantinischen Reiches in den letzten Jahrhunderten seines Bestehens dar. Im Jahr 2009 versammelte ein internationaler Kongress Experten aus dem In- und Ausland in Wien, die verschiedene Aspekte dieser Texte aus paläographischen, kodikologischen, soziolinguistischen, diplomatischen, kirchen-, rechts-, sozial- und wirtschaftsgeschichtlichen Perspektiven beleuchteten. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge in deutscher, englischer und französischer Sprache eröffnen damit einen neuen Blick auf das mittelalterliche Patriarchat von Konstantinopel und sein Register, aber auch insgesamt auf die fortwährende Bedeutung des Byzantinischen Reiches als spirituelles Zentrum in Ost- und Südosteuropa und im gesamten Mittelmeerraum in einer Epoche, in der seine politische Macht wenige Jahrzehnte vor der Eroberung durch die Osmanen 1453 bereits dramatisch geschrumpft war. Damit ist der Band sowohl für Byzantinisten als auch für die Mittelalterforschung insgesamt von großem Interesse. Preserved in two Greek manuscripts of the Austrian National Library, the “Register of the Patriarchate of Constantinople” contains more than 800 documents, which were written between 1315 and 1402 by or for the Patriarchate and the Synod of Bishops of Constantinople; it is one of the most important sources for the religious, political and social history of the Byzantine Empire in the last centuries of its existence. In 2009, an international congress assembled experts from Austria and abroad in Vienna, who illuminated various aspects of these texts from the perspectives of palaeography, codicology, sociolinguistics, church history, law, social and economic history, and history of diplomacy. The contributions collected in this volume (in German, English and French) open a new view on the medieval Patriarchate of Constantinople and its Register, but also in general on the continued significance of the Byzantine Empire as a spiritual centre in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and in the entire Mediterranean in an era in which its political power was already shrunk dramatically a few decades before the conquest by the Ottomans in 1453. Thus, the volume is of great interest both for experts from the field of Byzantine as well as Medieval Studies.

Die Regierungszeit des Matthias Corvinus (1458–1490) wird nicht nur als letzte Blütezeit des mittelalterlichen ungarischen Staates betrachtet, sondern kennzeichnet für ganz (Ostmittel)Europa eine höchst bewegte Periode des Übergangs vom Mittelalter in die Neuzeit. Die Interessen des Corvinus richteten sich sowohl nach Ost, wo er den Vormarsch der Osmanen, die 1453 Konstantinopel eingenommen hatte, aufzuhalten versuchte, als auch nach West, wo er danach strebte, Böhmen und die Habsburgischen Erblande mit Ungarn zu einer ersten „Donaumonarchie“ zu vereinen. Daneben förderte der König Kunst und Kultur, zog italienische Humanisten und einheimische Gelehrte an seinen Hof und sammelte lateinische und griechische Handschriften. Diese politischen und diplomatischen Aspekte der Herrschaft des Corvinus werden in den Beiträgen dieses Bandes gleichermaßen beleuchtet wie die religiösen und kulturellen; analysiert wird ebenso die Darstellung des Königs und seiner Epoche zum einen in westlichen, zum anderen in östlichen Quellen bis hin zur Historiographie des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit diesem interdisziplinären Blick von Ost nach West und vice versa richtet sich der Band sowohl an die auf Westeuropa gerichtete Mediävistik als auch an die auf Osteuropa konzentrierte Mittelalter- und Byzanzforschung. The reign of Matthias Corvinus (1458–1490) is not only regarded as a last heyday of the medieval Hungarian state, but marks a most turbulent period of transition from medieval to modern times for the whole of (East Central) Europe. The interests of Corvinus were directed both to the East, where he tried to stop the advance of the Ottomans, who had taken Constantinople in 1453, and to the West, where he sought to unite Bohemia and the hereditary lands of the Habsburgs with Hungary in order to create a first "Danube Monarchy". In addition, the king promoted art and culture, attracted Italian humanists and native scholars to his court and collected Latin as well as Greek manuscripts. These political, diplomatic, religious and cultural aspects of the rule of Corvinus are highlighted in the contributions of this book; also analysed is the perception of the king and his time in western and eastern sources as well as in historiography of the 19th and 20th centuries. Focusing on Corvinus’ time from East to West and vice versa, the volume addresses both medieval studies on Western Europe as well as on Eastern Europe.

Sigismund von Luxemburg (1368-1437), König von Ungarn, römisch-Deutscher König und schließlich Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches, ist nicht nur prägende Gestalt des späten Mittelalters im "katholischen" Westen Europas; eng waren stets auch seine Kontakte zur "orthodoxen Welt" Ost- und Südosteuropas. Diese erschöpften sich nicht in seinem 1396 bei Nikopolis gescheiterten Kreuzzug gegen die Osmanen, sondern setzten sich durch die Jahrzehnte bis zum Ende seiner Regierungszeit fort. Besonders intensiv waren natürlich die Beziehungen zu den beiden orthodoxen Donaufürstentümern der Moldau und Walachei sowie zu den orthodoxen Christen, die innerhalb des Königreichs Ungarn in Siebenbürgen in größerer Zahl lebten. Die im vorliegenden Band vereinten Studien wollen diesen Aspekt des Wirkens Sigismunds, seine diplomatischen, militärischen und kirchenpolitischen Bemühungen um die Herstellung der Einheit sowohl zwischen Ost- und Westkirche als auch innerhalb der Westkirche und um die Abwehr der osmanischen Expansion im Rahmen seiner weit gespannten politischen Pläne in verschiedenen Facetten beleuchten. Daß diese Bemühungen des Luxemburgers auch immer wieder die Aufmerksamkeit seiner byzantinischen Zeitgenossen erregten und er in verschiedene griechische Quellen seiner Zeit Eingang fand, machen einige Beiträge deutlich. Sigismund of Luxembourg (1368-1437), king of Hungary, Roman German king and finally emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, is not only a prominent figure of the late Middle Ages in "Catholic" Western Europe; always close were also his contacts with the "Orthodox World" in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. These contacts did not only include his crusade against the Ottomans, which failed at Nicopolis in 1396, but continued until the end of his reign. Particularly intensive were of course his relations with the two Orthodox Danubian principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, and with the Orthodox Christians living within the Kingdom of Hungary in Transylvania in large numbers. The studies combined in this volume try to illuminate this aspect of the activity of Sigismund, his diplomatic, military and church-political efforts to achieve unity, both between Eastern and Western Church and within the Western Church, and to organise the defense against the Ottoman expansion. Some contributions also show that Sigismund´s efforts arose the attention of his Byzantine contemporaries who mention him in various sources. Because of this interdisciplinary view from east to west and vice versa, the volume is of interest both for medieval studies directed at Western Europe as well as at Eastern Europe.
