Raija Mattila

is retired Director of the Finnish Institute in the Middle East

Raija Mattila, born 1956 in Helsinki in Finland, studied Assyriology at the University of Helsinki where she received her Ph.D. She specializes in the administration of the Assyrian Empire, and has worked as a researcher for several international research projects including the State Archives of Assyria Project, the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary, and the Intellectual Heritage of the Ancient Near East. She was the director of the Finnish Institute in the Middle East in 2004–2009 in Damascus, and 2014–2020 in Beirut.
