Martin Lehnert is Professor of East Asian Religion and Philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He holds a PhD in Chinese Studies (1999) from the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. His research focuses on esoteric Buddhism, Buddhist translation, and forms of literary communication. He has published extensively on Buddhist commentaries, the religious dimension of ethics, and strategies of hermeneutics. Recent publications deal with theoretical aspects related to doctrinal rhetoric, with a special focus on Chan Buddhist literature and the prajñā-pāramitā teaching, organizational and institutional aspects of normativity, as well as the relations between religion and politics in the formation of authority.
