Die vorliegende Monographie wurde als Antwort auf die im Hannes Androsch Preis 2011 gestellte Frage verfasst wie man “ein Sozialversicherungssystem ausgestalten sollte, damit es der zweifachen Gefährdung durch demographischen Wandel und Finanzmarktrisiko standhalten kann”. Die Monographie beinhaltet eine Reihe theoretischer und empirischer Befunde. Dabei wird wiederholt ein direkter Vergleich zwischen dem kapitalgedeckten und dem Umlageverfahren gezogen. Insbesondere werden auch zwei Behauptung ausführlich untersucht, die oft zur Unterstützung für den Umstieg auf ein kapitalgedecktes Verfahren vorgebracht werden: dass jenes mit einer höheren Rendite einhergehe und dass es demographische Schwankungen besser ausgleichen könne.  This monograph was written as an answer to the question posed by the Hannes Androsch Prize 2011 on “how to design a social security system which can withstand the dual threat of demographic developments and financial market risk”. The study provides a variety of theoretical and empirical arguments to support this assertion. In doing so it frequently focuses on a direct comparison between funded and unfunded systems. In particular, I discuss two major claims that are often put forward in support of the funded system: that it is associated with a higher rate of return and that it is more robust to demographic changes.
