The 2023-1 Issue comprises work of researchers from different disciplines, most of whom presented their work at the GI_Salzburg 2023 conference (https://gi-salzburg.org/en/). The articles address diverse collections of spatiotemporal data such as multispectral LIDAR, SAR or biology-related datasets, and advanced concepts, methods and tools applied for their analysis like OBIA or Google Earth Engine. Applications range from natural resources management, natural phenomena and hazards to green spaces, urban place perception, mobility, and infrastructure. The impact of ChatGPT on teaching and learning GIScience based on an anecdotal approach contributes to the overall discourse in the scientific and educational community respectively.

In the 2021-2 issue, the following three thematic areas are addressed: Advances in GIScience, Geo-Social Analytics, and Learning and Education with Geomedia. The contributions, for example, evaluate modes of generalization in animated choropleth maps; investigate different Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) architectures for monitoring wildlife in complex natural habitats; introduce an Augmented Reality learning environment for Geoinformatics education; investigate pedestrian infrastructure in a city considering the COVID-19 restrictions; or propose a customised workflow for place extraction from social media text and subsequent geocoding; or address various mobility issues for sustainable cities.

GIS as a technology has come a long way, from the early adoption of technical wizardry to the ubiquitous, if unconscious use by the masses. The creation of the GISociety is on its way through technological development, theoretical and empirical scientific research and inclusion of technology into education with increasing pedagogical justification. Defining new dimensions of hard- and software, brainware and orgware are all needed to further develop the GISociety.



The Geoinformatics Forum (www.gi-forum.org) held in Salzburg from July 2-5, 2013, links into these research areas. We are pleased to present work by researchers who actively contribute to the creation of the GISociety in theoretical, technical, and educational terms. This reflects that a GISociety can only be created though close interaction among the domains of science, technology and education. Topics of the 2013 proceedings therefore include:
