The first ever critical edition of the monumental Commentary of St Augustine on the Psalms, a project undertaken by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften) and the Patristic Institute at Rome (Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum), has taken yet another step forward. The volume containing Enarrationes in Psalmos 101-109 (CSEL 95/1), edited by F. Gori (University of Urbino; Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum) with the collaboration of C. Pierantoni (Pontifical Catholic University of Chile), has now been published. The project involved the editing and collocation of numerous manuscripts. The study of their relationships revealed that the manuscript tradition had been contaminated, but not to the point of making it impossible to identify the fundamental lines of the most ancient stemmatic relationships. The construction of the text was based primarily on text criticism appropriate to its genre and to the specific forms of the Enarrationes as preached. In fact, the oratorical character of the homilies on the Psalms, their realistically oral quality, along with their spritual and parentic content, are responsible for the great fortune that the Enarrationes enjoyed in the Middle Ages. At the same time, their great circulation and their vitality during this period were also responsible for the instability of the text as witnessed in the numerous variants present in the different branches of the manuscript tradition. These variants, as important and as skillfully crafted as they are, also tax the judgments of the editors in seeking to determine which readings are authentic.

Augustinus’ Enarrationes in Psalmos besteht teils aus (stenographisch festgehaltenen) Predigten, teils aus diktierten predigtartigen Erklärungen und bietet einen vollständigen Kommentar zum Buch der Psalmen. Die große Beliebtheit, deren sich dieses Werk im Mittelalter erfreute, ist in seinen exegetischen Prinzipien begründet: Mönchische Zirkel waren an seinem spirituellen und moralischen Gehalt im besonderen Maß interessiert. Somit sind die Enarrationes ein Schlüsseltext für das Verständnis der Geschichte der Exegese und der antiken christlichen Rhetorik. Die erste kritische Gesamtausgabe, erstellt auf Basis moderner textkritischer Erkenntnisse, wird die alte Edition der Mauriner (Paris 1681) ersetzen. Wegen der ungewöhnlich breiten Überlieferung des Corpus ist die editorische Arbeit an den Enarrationes auf zwei Forschergruppen in Wien und Rom aufgeteilt. Der vorliegende Band, erstellt von Franco Gori unter Mitarbeit von Giuliana Spaccia, enthält den letzten Teil der Enarrationes (zu den Psalmen 141 bis 150). Sie wurden von Augustinus in den nordafrikanischen Städten Hippo, Carthago bzw. Utica zwischen den Jahren 397 und 418 als Predigten gehalten, lediglich Enarratio 150 dürfte nach 420 diktiert worden sein. Augustine’s Enarrationes in psalmos, consisting of both spoken homilies and dictated clarifications in the style of sermons, comprises a thorough commentary on the Book of Psalms. Its rapid and widespread reception during the Middle Ages was due to its spiritual and moral exegesis, about which monastic circles were particularly interested. Considered as a whole, the work is a key text for the understanding of the history of biblical exegesis and early Christian rhetoric. This first complete edition, based on a text critical study and a scholarly analysis, aims to provide an alternative to the old Maurist text (Paris, 1681). Because of the extraordinary length of the complete corpus of the Enarrationes in Psalmos and its vast manuscript tradition, the editing project has been divided between two research teams (Vienna / Rome). The volume now being published (CSEL XCV/5), edited by Franco Gori in collaboration with Giuliana Spaccia, contains the last part of Augustine’s commentary, the Enarrationes 141-150. These sermons were delivered by Augustine in the North African cities of Hippo and Carthage, as well as in Utica between 397 and 418 (only the final homily, En. 150, was probably completed after 420).

In den Enarrationes in Psalmos erklärt Augustinus alle 150 Psalmen, teils in mündlichen Predigten, teils in diktierten Kommentaren. Sie fanden im Mittelalter schnell weite Verbreitung, besonders im monastischen Bereich, wo sie wegen ihrer exegetischen Vielfalt und ihres moralischen Gehalts geschätzt wurden. Die erste textkritisch und literaturwissenschaftlich fundierte Gesamtedition der Enarrationes in Psalmos, die die Ausgabe der Mauriner (Paris 1681) ersetzen soll, wurde wegen des außerordentlichen Textumfangs und der reichen handschriftlichen Überlieferung von zwei Arbeitsgruppen (Wien/Rom) erstellt. Nach den Enarrationes zu den Stufenpsalmen (119-133, CSEL XCV/3, Wien 2001) liegen nun als zweiter Teilband die Erklärungen zu den Psalmen 134–140 vor; sie stammen aus den Jahrzehnten zwischen 394 und 422 und wurden an verschiedenen Orten gepredigt. After the edition of the commentaries on the Gradual Psalms (Enarrationes 119-133, CSEL XCV/3, Vienna 2001), this second volume contains the exegesis of Psalms 134-140; the homilies were given in different places between the years 394 and 422.
