Dieser Band präsentiert einen interdisziplinären Diskurs über die jüngsten archäologischen Untersuchungen an den antiken Stätten von Sikyon, Aigeira und Lousoi. Die nordpeloponnesischen Poleis fungierten als Zentralorte dreier Mikroregionen, die seit der geometrischen und archaischen Zeit an ähnlichen Austauschnetzwerken partizipierten, wenn auch mit ganz unterschiedlichen Rollen. Angesichts ihrer geographischen Lage an der Südküste des Korinthischen Golfs einerseits und im gebirgigen Hinterland andererseits bieten sie Einblick in drei Mikrokosmen mit sehr unterschiedlichen Umweltbedingungen, sozio-politischen Strukturen und wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten. Wie die neuen Studien zeigen, waren die Mikroregionen und ihre Hauptsiedlungen trotz aller Unterschiede während der gesamten Antike durch starke kulturelle, wirtschaftliche und zeitweise auch politische Bindungen miteinander verbunden.

Die neuen Primärquellen, die durch die verschiedenen Beiträge erschlossen werden, tragen dazu bei, jeden Ort in seinem einzigartigen lokalen Kontext von der geometrischen bis zur römischen Periode zu charakterisieren. Das breite Spektrum der behandelten Themen umfasst die räumliche Konfiguration von Siedlungen, die verschiedenen Faktoren des städtischen Wachstums und Niedergangs, die Veränderungen von Konsum- und Produktionsmustern sowie von religiösen Praktiken und die Herausbildung von Gruppenidentitäten auf verschiedenen kulturellen Ebenen. This volume presents an interdisciplinary discourse on recent archaeological investigations at the ancient sites of Sikyon, Aigeira and Lousoi. These three Northern Peloponnesian poleis represent microregions which from the Geometric and Archaic periods onward participated in similar networks of exchange, albeit with different roles. In light of their geographical location on the southern coast of the Corinthian Gulf and in the mountainous hinterland, respectively, they offer insight into three microcosms with very different environmental conditions, sociopolitical structures and economic potential. As the new studies demonstrate, the microregions and their main settlements were linked throughout antiquity by strong cultural, economic and at times also political ties, despite all their differences.

The new primary sources revealed by the various contributions help to characterise each place within its unique local context from the Geometric up to the Roman period. The broad spectrum of topics discussed include the spatial configuration of settlements, the various factors of urban growth and decline, changes in consumption and production patterns as well as religious practices, and the shaping of group identities on different cultural levels.

Approaching Ancient Greek Coastal and Inland Poleis in the Northern Peloponnese

Die Terrasse um das Theater des antiken Aigeira zählt zu den interessantesten Bauensembles hellenistischer Zeit auf der Peloponnes. Ihre Erforschung ist einer der Schwerpunkte der langjährigen Tätigkeit des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts in Aigeira. Der von Walter Gauß herausgegebene Sammelband präsentiert sowohl Erkenntnisse zu den früheren Grabungen von Wilhelm Alzinger der 1970er und 1980er Jahre als auch neue Ergebnisse aus den unter der Leitung des Herausgebers zwischen 2011 und 2018 durchgeführten Forschungen. Die großzügige Ausgestaltung des vorher kaum bebauten Areals in ein neues öffentliches Zentrum mit Sakral- und Profanbauten begann um die Mitte des 3. Jh. v. Chr. und steht am Beginn der Blütezeit Aigeiras. Diese ist eng mit der Geschichte des Achaiischen Bundes verknüpft und dauerte bis in die römische Kaiserzeit hinein an. Bis zum 1. Jh. v. Chr. wurden im Theaterbereich das Theater, ein dorischer Ringhallentempel, ein großes Peristylgebäude und mehrere kleine tempelartige Bauten, sogenannte Naiskoi, errichtet, die vermutlich als Schatzhäuser, Bankett- oder Kultgebäude genutzt wurden. Während Aigeira bis in die beginnende Spätantike ein städtisches Zentrum blieb, hatte der Theaterbereich zu dieser Zeit seine Funktion als öffentliches Zentrum verloren und diente im 4./5. Jh. n. Chr. als Werkstattareal. In vierzehn Beiträgen werden Aspekte der Entwicklung und Ausstattung einzelner Gebäude sowie ausgewählter Gruppen von Kleinfunden diskutiert, aber auch Fragen zur Funktion des Areals und seiner Bedeutung für das politische und religiöse Geschehen in Aigeira. 

 The theatre terrace of ancient Aigeira is considered to be one of the most interesting architectural ensembles of the Hellenistic period on the Peloponnese. Its exploration is one of the foci of the long-term activities of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Aigeira. This volume, edited by Walter Gauß, presents both results from the earlier excavations by Wilhelm Alzinger in the 1970s and 1980s as well as recent research conducted under the direction of the editor in this area between 2011 and 2018. The lavish expansion of the previously scarcely built-up area into a new public centre with religious and secular buildings began around the middle of the 3rd century BC and marks the beginning of Aigeira's heyday. This is closely linked to the history of the Achaian League and lasted into the Roman imperial period. Until the 1st century BC, the theatre, a Doric peripteros, a large peristyle building and several small temple-like buildings, so-called naiskoi, were erected in the theatre area. The latter were probably used as treasuries, dining or cult buildings. While Aigeira remained an urban centre until the beginning of Late Antiquity, the theatre area had lost its function as a public centre by this time and served as a workshop area in the 4th/5th century AD. Fourteen contributions discuss aspects of the development and design of individual buildings, selected groups of small finds, and questions regarding the function of the area and its importance for the political and religious life at Aigeira.

Aegina has long been recognised as a major production centre of a variety of widely exported ceramic containers not only in the relatively recent past but also in Classical antiquity and especially during the Middle and Late Bronze Age. Moreover, the prehistoric ceramic industry based on Aegina has become an increasingly important phenomenon in recent scholarship dealing with the rise of complex societies in the Aegean world during 2nd millennium BC. Such persistence on pottery production on Aegina through time renders obvious that a combination of factors, such as socio-economic, historical and geographical ones, as well as the locally available raw materials and the attraction of Aeginetan ceramics at other sites, must be taken into consideration in addressing the development of a specialized potting centre on the island.



This study is the first to undertake a comprehensive look at the Aeginetan ceramic industry during much of the Bronze Age (ca. 2500-1200 BC), aiming at shedding light upon the factors influencing transformations in potting traditions, and the growth and decline of a specialised pottery production centre on Aegina. Advocating a landscape approach, it concentrates not only on pottery production but also on supply and consumption of ceramic vessels on the island. The systematic stylistic study of the formal attributes of local products and imports at the site of Kolonna is combined with the investigation of their manufacturing technology and the compositional characterisation of their fabrics through petrographic and chemical analysis. This integrated archaeological and scientific examination of the pottery, together with research on the island’s resources, replication experiments and ethnoarchaeology, provides the ground for the reconstruction of the local potting traditions and the understanding variability observed within and across certain periods of the Bronze Age.

Die Ergebnisse der langjährigen Ausgrabungen auf Ägina-Kolonna, die die Bedeutung dieser Stätte während der Mittleren Bronzezeit für den gesamten ägäischen Bereich deutlich zu erkennen geben, waren Anlaß dafür, einen internationalen Workshop mit dem Thema „Middle Helladic Pottery and Synchronisms“ zu veranstalten. Seit den bahnbrechenden Arbeiten von Carl W. Blegen und Alan J. B. Wace und anderen hat sich ein allgemeines Einvernehmen bezüglich Mittelhelladischer Keramiksequenzen und deren Subphasen entwickelt. Es ist jedoch noch immer schwierig, die individuellen stilistischen Entwicklungsstufen der verschiedenen Landschaften des griechischen Festlandes miteinander zu verbinden, ebenso wie die Beziehungen zu weiter entfernten Regionen - z.B. den ägäischen Inseln -festzulegen.
