Mathias Fermer
is Lecturer at the Department of South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna
Mathias Fermer studied Tibetology and Classical Indology at the Department of Indian and Tibetan Studies at the University of Hamburg. Within the SFB Visions of Community (VISCOM, 2011–2019), he was a doctoral researcher at the Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia (IKGA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, working on Sakyapa communities in fifteenth-century southern Central Tibet (present–day Lhokha). His research focusses on the monastic and hagiographical literature and the historical geography of the region, involving close cooperation with native scholars and locals. He teaches digital humanities courses at the Department of South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies at the University of Vienna and is involved in several projects for cataloguing and studying collections of Tibetan literature.
