„Tell el-Dabʿa XXII“ ist die abschließende und umfassende Publikation der Ergebnisse einer Grabung des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts, Zweigstelle Kairo, im Areal von Ezbet Ruschdi, nordöstlich von Tell el-Dabʿa (Areal R/I). Bereits in den 1950er Jahren hat eine Grabung der ägyptischen Antikenverwaltung an dieser Stelle die Ruinen eines monumentalen Ziegeltempels der 12. Dynastie nebst umgebender Wohnbebauung freigelegt. Die österreichische Grabung des Jahres 1996 unter der Leitung von Manfred Bietak sollte den damaligen Befund neu untersuchen und in Details klären. Daraus entwickelte sich eine größere archäologische Unternehmung in zwei Kampagnen, die zahlreiche neue Befunde und reichlich Fundmaterial erbrachte. Das Tempelgebäude wurde neu untersucht und aufgenommen; es wird gezeigt, dass die Gründung nicht vor der Mitte der 12. Dynastie (wahrscheinlich im fünften Jahr Sesostris III.) erfolgt ist. Eine darunter gelegene ältere Siedlung aus der ersten Hälfte der 12. Dynastie wurde neu entdeckt. 

Die Darstellung des Baubefundes des Tempels und der Häuser der Siedlung sowie die Vorstellung und Auswertung des reichen Fundgutes (Keramik, Silices, Statuenfragmente etc.) stehen im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Studie in 2 Bänden (Teil 1: Text; Teil 2: Abbildungen, Tafeln, Pläne, Profile, Schnitte). 

 Tell el-Dab'a XXII is the comprehensive final publication of the results of an excavation by the Cairo branch of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in the area of Ezbet Rushdi, northeast of Tell el-Dab'a (area R/I). A first excavation at that site in the 1950s by the Egyptian Antiquities Organisation had revealed the existence of a large mud brick temple plus surrounding settlement structures of 12th dynasty date. The Austrian archaeological work in 1996 under the directorship of Manfred Bietak had the initial scope to re-examine the previous results and to clarify some details. However, it developed into a more substantial excavation held in two campaigns, which yielded many new results and finds. The temple building was re-studied; it could be established that it was founded not earlier than the middle-12th dynasty (probably in the fifth year of Sesostris III). A previous settlement stretching under the temple was newly discovered. The focal point of the present publication in two volumes (Part 1: text; Part 2: illustrations, plates, profiles) is the presentation of the architecture of both the temple and the houses of the settlement, as well as the presentation and study of the many findings (ceramics, flints, statue-fragments, etc.).

Das vorliegende Buch enthält Artikel, die auf Vorträgen eines Kongresses zur Stadtentwicklung im Alten Ägypten beruhen, der im November 2006 an der ÖAW stattgefunden hat. Innerhalb dieses vorgegebenen Rahmens umspannen die Artikel ein thematisch und chronologisch sehr weites Feld. Von ganz unterschiedlichen Seiten werden verschiedene Aspekte der Stadtentwicklung beleuchtet. Die Struktur einzelner Gebäudetypen (F. Doyen, S. Hendrickx) sowie die räumliche (E. Czerny, I. Forstner-Müller, M. Lehner) und soziale (M. Bietak, K. Spence) Organisation von Siedlungen wird ebenso behandelt, wie etwa Fragen der Siedlungsgeographie (A. Graham). Den Toranlagen der nubischen Festungen ist ein eigener Beitrag gewidmet (C. Vogel), ebenso der Frage der Versorgung eines so entlegenen Militärstützpunktes wie Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham an der libyschen Grenze (S. Snape). Neben der diachronen Darstellung der Entwicklung eines bestimmten Platzes (C. v. Pilgrim) stehen Erörterungen zum Städtebau einer bestimmten Epoche, des griechisch-römischen Ägypten (W. Müller). Dazu kommen die philologischen Betrachtungen J. Kahls zur „Anthropologie der Stadt“. Innerhalb eines chronologischen Rahmens von der Pyramidenzeit des Alten Reiches bis zur römischen Kaiserzeit werden mannigfaltige Aspekte zur Stadtentwicklung u.a. von Tell el-Dabca, Giza, Kahun, Amarna, Karnak, El-Kab, Elephantine, Assuan und Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham behandelt. The present volume is a collection of papers given at a workshop on urban development in Ancient Egypt which was held at the AAS in November 2006. The articles cover a wide variety of themes within the frame of this general topic, and aspects of urban development are dealt with from very different points of view. The structure of specific building types (F. Doyen, S. Hendrickx), as well as the spacial (E. Czerny, I. Forstner-Müller, M. Lehner) and social (M. Bietak, K. Spence) organisation of settlements are dealt with, including questions of settlement geography (A. Graham). Specific problems are given consideration, such as entrance protection in Nubian fortresses (C. Vogel) or the question of external supply versus self-sufficiency at a remote place like Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham on the Libyan border (S. Snape). One can find both the analysis of the diachronic development of a specific site throughout history (C. v. Pilgrim) and a general study on urbanism during a given period, Graeco-Roman Egypt (W. Müller). J. Kahl’s analysis of texts shows that cities in Ancient Egypt were allegorized as females with human properties. Within a chronological frame from the Old Kingdom through the Roman Empire, many different aspects of sites such as Tell el-Dabca, Giza, Kahun, Amarna, Karnak, El-Kab, Elephantine, Aswan and Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham are discussed.

Der vorliegende Band enthält Beiträge, die sowohl neue archäologische Daten präsentieren, als auch solche, die die Neubewertung älteren Materials zum Gegenstand haben, und eine Zeitspanne von der Frühen Bronzezeit bis zum Beginn der späten Bronzezeit abdecken, wobei der Schwerpunkt bei der Mittleren Bronzezeit (1. Hälfte des 2. Jahrtausends v.Chr.) liegt. Das gemeinsame Thema aller Beiträge sind die interkulturellen Beziehungen und ihre Chronologie. Der Grabungsplatz Tell el-Dab’a ist mit mehreren Beiträgen vertreten. D. Aston gibt eine Zusammenfassung über die Forschungsgeschichte zur sog. Tell el-Yahudije Ware, einer entscheidenden Materialgruppe zur Synchronisierung Ägyptens mit der Levante und Zypern. K. Kopetzkys Artikel über die MB IIB-Keramik der Hyksoszeit ist ein lange erwarteter Überblick über den Bestand des für dieses Material zentralen Platzes. R. Schiestl diskutiert lokale und „fremdländische“ Aspekte des Bestattungsbrauches in Tell el-Dab’a, und I. Forstner-Müllers Präsentation eines Sichelschwertes aus der Zeit der 13. Dynastie aus Tell el-Dab’a erhellt die Übernahme mesopotamischen Waffenbrauches durch die ägyptisierten „Asiaten“ des Deltas. Aus dem Libanon selbst gibt C. Doumet-Serhal eine Darstellung der Grabungen des Britischen Museums in Sidon und der äußerst wichtigen Ergebnisse für das Verständnis des früh- und mittelbronzezeitlichen Handels im östlichen Mittelmeer und der Ägäis, ergänzt durch A. MacGillivrays Diskussion eines der ältesten minoischen Importstücke in der Levante. Y.M. Bou-Assaf diskutiert Elemente der frühbronzezeitlichen Architektur in Byblos, während J.P. Thalmann eine Synchronisierung dieses Platzes mit dem von ihm ausgegrabenen Tell Arqa unternimmt. Schließlich behandeln R. Pruzsinsky und M. Heinz die chronologischen Implikationen der Texte aus Kamid el-Loz. P. Fischers Beitrag über ein Importstück (aus Beirut?) in das Jordantal erhellt die Möglichkeiten typologischer und petrographischer Methoden zur Analyse des Fernhandels. Drei Beiträge der italienischen Ausgräber von Tell Mishrife/Qatna (von M. Iamoni, M. Luciani und D. Morandi-Bonacossi) behandeln die lokale einfache Ware, dekorierte und importierte Waren sowie den Übergang von der Frühen zur Mittleren Bronzezeit. J. Lagarce und E. Puytison-Lagarce behandeln die Beziehungen zwischen Syrien und dem Ostmediterranen Raum (besonders Ägypten), anhand der Funde aus Ras Ibn-Hani, einem Hafen von Ugarit. The volume offers a selection of scholarly articles that present both new data and its interpretations and a reanalysis and synthesis of already existing data, ranging from the Early Bronze Age through the beginning of the Late Bronze Age. In geographical terms, the regions listed in its subtitle are the heart of the volume, but there are also important implications for the archaeology of the southern Levant, the Aegean, Cyprus and Anatolia. Thematically, the volume concerns cross-cultural connections and chronology, and their reciprocal relationship. The team working on the finds from Tell Dab’a presents a number of important syntheses. D. Aston's contribution offers a summary of the scholarship on the so-called Tell el-Yahudiyeh pottery, which is a crucial marker for synchronizing Egypt, the Levant, and Cyprus. K. Kopetzky's presentation of the Hyksos period pottery is a long-awaited summary of the key site for this subject. R. Scheistl discusses the local and foreign attributes in the mortuary tradition at Tell Daba. I. Forstner-Müller's presentation of a scimitar from 13th dynasty Tell Daba demonstrates the adoption of broader Mesopotamian weapons and martial symbols among Egyptianized Asiatics in the Delta. From the Lebanon, C. Doumet –Serhal's report on the excavations at Sidon offers a glimpse into the ground-breaking discoveries this site offers and will likely continue to produce for understanding the Early and Middle Bronze Age trade in the eastern Mediterranean and its relations to the Aegean. The latter is expanded upon by MacGillivray's discussion of what may be among the earliest Minoan import to the Levant. Y.M. Bou-Assaf discusses the architectural traditions of Byblos, which is complemented by J.P. Thalmann's synchronization of this site with his own excavations at Tell Arqa. A welcome summary is R. Pruzsinszky's and M. Heinz' discussion of the rare Levantine assemblage of cuneiform texts from Kamid el-Loz. P. Fischer's article on an enigmatic coastal (from Beirut?) import to the Jordan Valley is a case study on the interdisciplinary application of typology and petrography to long-distance trade. Three contributions from the Italian team excavating at Tell Mishrifeh/Qatna by Iamoni, Luciani, and Morandi-Bonacossi, treat the local simple ware, decorated and imported ware, and the Early Bronze-Middle Bronze Age transition, respectively. Lastly, relations between Syria and the eastern Mediterranean world (specifically Egypt) is underscored by Lagarce and Puytison-Lagarce in their article on the finds from Ras Ibn-Hani, one of Ugarit's ports.

Der in 5 Abschnitte gegliederte umfangreiche Band umfasst die „Proceedings“ der zweiten, im Jahre 2003 an der ÖAW gehaltenen Gesamttagung des Forschungsprojekts SCIEM 2000. Als Einleitung ist M. Wieners „Key-lecture“ (Times change: The current state of the Debate in Old World Chronology) wiedergegeben, gefolgt von dem naturwissenschaftlichen Abschnitt „Science and Chronology“. Besonders Ergebnisse der 14C-Methode werden in mehreren Beiträgen kontroversiell diskutiert. Einen wichtigen neuen Gesichtspunkt bringen Pearce et al. in die Chronologiediskussion ein, die aufzeigen, dass Ablagerungen in Eisbohrkernen aus Grönland, die bisher der minoischen Erruption des Thera-Vulkans zugewiesen wurden, tatsächlich von dem Vulkan Aniakchak in Alaska stammen und somit für die Ägäis nicht relevant sind. Es folgen Artikel, in welchen die Chronologiediskussion eher aus der Warte der archäologischen Evidenz bzw. der historischen Chronologie geführt wird. Gegliedert ist dieser Abschnitt nach den wichtigsten behandelten Regionen: „Ägypten“, „Die Levante und Syrien“ sowie „Die Ägäis, Zypern und angrenzende Gebiete“. Neben Berichten und Analysen zu zahlreichen Einzelaspekten der Archäologie und Chronologie der genannten Gebiete enthält dieser Abschnitt auch Manfred Bietaks Diskussion aller für minoisch gehaltenen Malereien aus Ägypten, Israel, Syrien und der Levante. Der letzte Teil des Bandes nennt sich „Mycenaeans and Philistines in the Levant“ und enthält die Akten eines Workshops, der im Rahmen des SCIEM-Kongresses abgehalten wurde. Zusammenfassend kann man festhalten, dass der vorliegende Band neuerlich die räumlich und zeitlich weitgefasste Thematik von SCIEM 2000 in einer dichten Abfolge von Studien und Analysen aus den unterschiedlichsten Perspektiven zur Darstellung bringt. Sowohl die erzielten Fortschritte und Ergebnisse werden dargestellt, als auch die Richtung und Desiderate der weiteren Forschungen sichtbar gemacht.

The Synchronisation of Civilisations in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Second Millenium B.C. III

Siegel und Siegelabdrücke bilden eine umfangreiche und qualitativ hochwertige Quelle zur historischen Rekonstruktion des alten Orient. Im Ägypten des 2. Jahrtausends v. Chr. treten sie typischerweise als Skarabäen auf, welche von den umliegenden Ländern sowohl eingeführt als auch lokal imitiert wurden. Der vorliegende Band enthält einerseits Studien zur Entwicklung und Chronologie der Skarabäensiegel (T. Bagh, G. Martin), andererseits wichtige Beiträge zur Auswertung des chronologischen und historischen Gehaltes. Besonders für die Geschichte der 2. Zwischenzeit stellen die Siegel eine Hauptquelle dar (St. Quirke), und hier interessiert besonders das Verhältnis von ägyptischen zu palästinensischen Fundgruppen (D. Ben-Tor, O. Keel). Siegel aus Palästina beleuchten aber auch das Verhältnis zu Ägypten im NR (B. Brandl, N. Lalkin). In Ägypten selbst nimmt Tell el-Dab‘a mit seiner ägyptisch-kanaanäischen Mischkultur eine Sonderstellung ein. Aus der Vielfalt der Merkmalskombinationen können lokale Werkstätten mit ihren Traditionen herausgefiltert werden (Ch. Mlinar); in dem Beitrag von M. Bietak wird ein geschlossener Fundkontext vorgestellt, der von Truhenverschlüssen stammende Siegelabdrücke aus dem späten MR, der Hyksoszeit und der 18. Dynastie beinhaltet. In Abydos belegen Siegelabdrücke des Mittleren Reiches kultische Aktivitäten im frühgeschichtlichen Königsfriedhof von Umm el-Qaab (V. Müller). J. Wegner konnte anhand von Siegelabdrücken im Palast des Bürgermeisters der Totenstadt Sesostris III. in Abydos erstmals einen Frauen-Residenztrakt nachweisen.

Scarabs of the 2nd Millenium BC from Egypt, Nubia, Crete and the Levant: Chronological and Historical Implications

Die langjährigen Ausgrabungen des Österreichischen Archäologischen Instituts in Kairo unter der Leitung von Prof. Manfred Bietak in Tell el Dabʿa dokumentieren eine kontinuierliche Siedlungsfolge vom Mittleren Reich über die Zweite Zwischenzeit bis ins Neue Reich. Als bisher ältester ergrabener Beleg konnten unter den Ruinen von Avaris Teile einer orthogonal angelegten, von einer Mauer umschlossenen Plansiedlung aus dem frühen Mittleren Reich freigelegt werden. Der Schwerpunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit liegt auf der Darstellung der umfangreichen Kollektion an Gebrauchskeramik, die einen Überblick über die Produktion einer provinziellen Siedlung bietet, die wohl im Zuge staatlicher binnenkolonisatorischer Maßnahmen am Ostdeltarand angelegt worden war. Tierknochenfunde und botanische Reste ermöglichen eine Rekonstruktion der zur Versorgung der Siedlung dienenden Fauna und Flora. Im Zusammenwirken mit weiteren Fundgruppen, wie den zahlreichen Silices, erschließen sich die bisher kaum dargestellten harten Lebensbedingungen im Alltag einer ägyptischen Stadt abseits des Prunkes der Tempel und des königlichen Hofes.
